Will the usa become an empire someday? I think it possible, because eventually were bound to get a power hungry president.

That's the evil genius, disguise it as "protecting freedom"

Empire? I doubt it, but it doesn't seem too promising about not turning into an oligarchy. There are quite a few politicians who seem to operate as though it already is (I'm look at you, Ted Stevens!)

I think it more likely we will fade into history as a country that turned backward from progress. Just my2 cents.

The US was an empire, but not any longer. There are not going to be any more empires when there isn't any "unclamed" land left.

The U.S. is in the process of declining, not the process of gaining an empire. When the cost of securing goods on which the political entity depends, oil in this case, exceeds what the entity can afford, the entitity declines. Iraq's oil production is less than under Saddam. The oil industry has a lot of fragile infrastructure and, to put it mildly, the Iraqis have not been cooperative. Let's see, what is that oil costing us? About $300 billion plus $50-$60 a barrel for not only that oil but all the rest of the oil we buy.

Washington Post, 12/08/05

Furthermore, our balance of trade is in the toilet. Income and wealth are accumulating in the richest segments of the population. Real wages have stagnated. The quality of education -- real education, not just getting a degree from the education factory -- is declining, particularly in science and engineering. Research funding in most areas has decreased drastically. Manufacturing has largely moved out of the United States and white collar jobs are in the process of moving. We've totally alienated a good portion of the rest of the world, not just the Muslims, but the Europeans too. Corruption is rampant.

No, I don't think we have to worry about empire.

ROFLMAO?

Take in comparison the former British empire-----they made no bones about it-----military spending kept it together. Much consisted in having the best battleships sail into ports of call in peace time. A constant reminder that one such ship--could---with inpunity decimate an entire coast line. And a large army could follow.

Of course modern technology has evolved this age old game------to really kick ass takes boots on the ground-----air power will only do so much.-----but what is now a terror to smaller nations is the smart bomb.-----which means just one air craft carrier can really make a given country hurt.---where before it would take hundreds of thousands of planes to do equal damage.

But for the morally challenged it might be pointed out-----we have paid for a kick ass military and get nothing in return-----is Iraq just the beginning and who will dare oppose us?

Which also explains why many nations are in a race to aquire nukes-----the only thing that can counterbalance our current hegmony.

For the first time in many thousands of years there is no balance of power----and that in itself is scary.---------especially since I would not trust my countries President with a bb gun.------and yes,
I am talking about George W. Bush.

It's already happening.

Haha do you hate neoconservatives? ;):)

The US has no ambitions for additional territory gain. Nowadays it's actually a LIABILITY to acquire more territory, especially in the case of the USA.

What do you think Iraq is? Who's territory is it? Does the U.S. control it?

The US has been an Empire for a very long time. Don't confuse "empire" with annexing territory, that stage of empire ended quite sometime ago, but there are other aspects of empire that are alive and somewhat well. As China and India Rise, the US will decline.

Empires still exist, its just that they've been institutionalized so strongly that we don't even think of them as empires in the old sense. Modern empires imo would include the US, russia, china, and possibly a few others. Russia is the most blatent example. Vast swaths of the country are inhabited by people who do not think of themselves as ethnically russian, and in many cases the local population wants sovereignty. (chechnya being the most famous, but not the only, example)

Well if we 'control' it, we're doing a pretty sh!tty job of running it. Allowing religious fundamentalists to get a majority in an election doesn't exactly go along with out interests.

The United States is the last "empire" in exsistance, we're the only country on the planet that can make preciese military strikes across the globe at a moments notice...
