Will us humans always require sleep?

I've always wondered if humans will always require sleep. What do you think?

Maybe down the road there will be a way to sort of 'recharge' without sleeping a wink. People would be awake 24/7. Think of how much more productive the world would be. It's estimated people sleep for 1/3rd of their life, that's a lot of time spent sleeping. I like sleeping when I'm actually sleeping, just not when I'm trying to fall asleep, which is a huge hassle every night/day. I'd rather not have to sleep at all, I would assume most people agree. I mean, if people never got tired, why would they want to sleep?

Speaking of which, I've been up for a long time. Can ya tell? ;)

Sleep is the best. It will never abandon me.

with every technological advance comes the perversion of such.

all the additional time would (considering the majority's life choices) be wasted anyways. besides, i like sleep... that's where i'm a pirate!

sleeping is one of my favorite parts of the day. that feeling when you are tired from a days work and then the gym, then you just lie down and give that huge sigh ... i love that feeling :)

I too have casually thought it would be great to be able to trade sleep for some extra non-working time. If we are ever able to figure out what exactly it is that goes on in our heads while we're sleeping, maybe we can come up with a drug to replicate the process, but I doubt it.

Plus, I shudder to think how company work hours would be affected by a "no-sleep" world. Some are bad enough as it is.

Yes, if I recall... if you go without sleep for about 2 weeks you'll die. Saw that on an episode of House, so it MUST be true.

no thank you, I saw the X-files where that military unit was given surgery that made is so they no longer had to sleep and they all regretted it, and one of them went crazy and could project dreams to other people while they were awake, except the dreams were real and people could die I WANT TO SLEEEEEPPP

... I mean, Yea, possibly at some point we might not need it since we could emulate it another way... but I'd rather sleep.

If we didn't sleep anymore.....the corporate world would just want to keep us at work 24/7 then. So crap no, I already work enough freaking hours. I love sleepy time.

I hate sleeping--I think it feels good and all that, but I always feel like I'm wasting time...

Sleep is a trait that has evolved over billions of years. I doubt it will leave us. ;)

Unless you can somehow have some regeneration machine that with automatically speed up the retention of information in our brains and also regenerate our organ tissue on demand.

Or 6,000 years depending on your philosophies. :D

But yeah, I love sleeping too much to give it up.

If our bodies weren't meant to sleep, we simply would't do it.

If we found some way to cheat that, we'd probably burn out and die faster or face some other serious mental health/physical health problems.

many things had been around and were in natural balance long before we created 'solutions' to them.. such as virii and bacterium that kill us.
we like to change nature to better suit us.
on a similar note, the pro-life activists need to never take a vaccine or pill to kill an infection. so what if its hurting you, that's all life and its just trying to do what it naturally does to survive. ;)

;) :p I find no problem with science searching for the truth and religion doing the same. It is the ignorant that ignore truth even when it stares them blatantly in the face that I have a problem with. That is on both sides of the camp.
