Will urine damage CD's?

Ok, my friend was drunk last night so I offered to give him a ride over to this party we were going to. He had a little too much and he passed out. Here is where I screwed up. I just rolled the windows halfway down and left him there. I went out to my truck about three to four hours later and woke him up. He got up and I could see that he pissed all over my seat. He had fallen over onto my CD wallet earlier and so it was soaked in urine. My CD's were also soaking. I had to go so I just borrowed a towel and cleaned everthing up the best I could. My truck stinks so I am going to try and get it professionally cleaned. All in all there was probably about $150 - 200 of CD's.

Can I just soak them in hot water or will that damage them. I haven't tried cleaning them yet (I had to go out and buy some of those rubber yellow gloves). Does water (or urine) damage CD's? Any help is needed since I can't afford to buy them again.

cool water and a few drops of Dawn detergent should do it. Also reconsider your choice of friends ;)

I know water will not damage them. I'm not sure about...

The dawn won't do anything to it? I want to disinfect it as well as just clean it.

He is not a close friend, but if I didn't take him he would have found a way. i just didn't want him driving so I took him.

id be more concerned with him paying for the cleaning instead of the cds....just add on an extra 200 dollars to his total bill

Now here is something you might not find with a google search.

I would think the CDs are fine wash them in anything not abrasive or high in detergent.

Do you think the cleaning bill would be more? He already told me he was going to pay for it to get cleaned. I figured that it would only be about $50. It is just a single cab truck. I've never had it cleaned before though, so I have no idea what it runs.

doesn't the urine contain alcohol? since he was drinking. i don't think regular urine would do anything to the cds. just make sure there ain't stains on it. try clean one and see if it works.

I believe urine is acidic. I'm not a chemist or anything, but I can't imagine that them being soaked is a good thing. Water is more than likely fine, but I don't know for sure.

Urine is a base (ammonia) just think of it as your CDs got disinfected for free. It not gonna hurt the plastic on CDs, just soak it in water with a drop of dish soap for 2 minutes then let the water run off to dry. (The soap is so you don't get water mark - it is an old technique that photo profesional uses to clean & develope film)

Yeah, his was probably 90% alcohol. Is that bad for it?

So urine is a disinfectant? Does water temp matter?

heh, thats a pretty funny story. im surprised he was so drunk to piss all over himself, but didnt hurl. usually u have more control over when to piss than when to barf.

anyway, if you're unsure about your cds, piss on some aol cds first and then try to clean them and see if they still work. when you find the right cleaning method, do the same thing with your music ones.

CD-R's are far more sensitive than regular CD's and they maybe damaged by being wet for more than a few minutes. Regular CD's are pretty tough. Wash them in lukewarm water with soap, then rinse them in distilled water. Write off your CD wallet as unusable and make him by you a new one. Your CD's will be clean, but that emotinal "gross" feeling willknever go away.

I hope you photographed him all soaked in piss for everyone's enjoyment and laughter.

As far as your seat is concerned, you need to have it professinally cleaned ASAP and specifically say your friend pissed all over it, otherwise you'd get a general shampooing without specific urine treatment.

After it's been cleaned, look under long-wave ultraviolet light(blacklight). If there is any yellow green fluorescence that is unequal to other seats that hasn't been pissed on or odor following a clean up, it's still there. Urine is very good breeding ground for bacteria and it contains enough non-volatile component to cause odor problems. Pure ammonia solution is 100% volatile.

Cold water temperature that is less than 10C would take much longer than room temperature water to loosen any dirt or scum off the plastic surface. for every 2-3C diff you have to double the soaking time.

Photo developing machine can safely develope fragile film (jell) emotion up to 57C, while CD uses polycarbonate that can withstand much higher temperature.

Film back uses a polymer (polyethylene or polystyrene) that operate at 180C from projection camera light temperature. (IMAX Light temperature before the cooling compression chamber & temper glass is in excess of 500C)

To be on the safe side I would use water that is cool enought so you wouldn't scold yourself.

How the fvck do you know so much about urine? I don't have any black lights, but I didn't know it was this serious. Do you ever look at pee under flourescents?

its jerboy. dont ask how he knows. he just does.

also, burn that cd wallet and pick up another one. you dont want someone to say:

"hey, can i check out your cd's?"
"sure"
"you know theres a funny story about that cd wallet you're holding"
*5 seconds later*
"OMG!!! OH NO! AIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!! NOOOOOO!O!OO!O!!!!"
*person runs to bathroom screaming obscenties at you*
"guess you just had to be there....."
