Ok lately i have been connecting to the net at slow speeds, like 21.6 to 24.0 If i call up the phone company will they put in a new telephone line? i hope so because i live in the boonies and the phone line is really crappy and i would love just once to get over a 30k connection. And no its not my modem or nothing, i have a zoom 56k modem and it usually goes faster, i use MSN. The phone company here is Bellsouth btw. Anyone ever try this and if so what'd it take for them to put in new lines or make them better? mines prolly still the same lines from like the early 80's or something.

It might help, but I kind of doubt it. There was a program that let your modem test the lines somewhere on the internet.

You have to have clear lines all the way from your house to your ISP. If you livein a small town or your ISP is in a small town, then you have to worry if the phone companies hardware is up to date.

Will

No.

The reason you are getting slow speeds is not because of the quality of the line. The low speeds are due to the load coils that the phone company has to put on the line in order for your voice conversations not to sound echoey and for them not to squeal all of the time.

Once you are about 4.5KM (thus the DSL line limit) from the Central Office, they start using these coils. These coils will be on every line in your area (except on data circuit lines), so there will be no free "unloaded" cable pairs for you to use. 🙁

Dsl is in the same city i'm in , i am jus 2.3 miles far away to get it =(. Also my friend who lives like in the city part gets a connection of like 48 usually.

how much faster?

maybe its MSN being stingy on their pipe?

i dunno...

The phone company is only required to provide the proper bandwidth necessary for voice communication. That's what they'll tell you.

amish
