Will this work? Replicate primary harddrive to new harddrive..

Hey guys, I currently have a 40gb IBM harddrive (primary C🙂 and a 80gb Maxtor harddrive (backup D🙂.
I am running out of space on my C:, and bought a new 250gb Maxtor harddrive. Can I:

1. Temporary remove my 2nd harddrive and put in 250gb drive
2. Use Partition Magic to "copy" C:/ to the D:/ 250gb drive
3. Remove the original IBM C: drive, and replace it with the 250gb (new master)
4. Put back the 80gb Maxtor and have it as backup D: again.

Basically can I replicate my master drive right now (C🙂 without losing any data while still gaining more gigs?

(Using WinXP Pro)

Thanks.

I have done this with Drive Image, not with Partition Magic.

If you could do this with Partition Magic, I wonder why there would be a market for another product like Drive Image (or Ghost).

Tim, what software?

Navid, I'm not familiar with drive image but I thought you have to back them up to CD first or atleast store it as a file that you extract later. I need to copy everything so I can just be up and running as if nothing changed (except that I gained 210gb).

Yes, that should work fine.

Yes, you are right! There is a difference between what Drive Image does and what you want to do.

There is a software utility that should have come with your new drive if it is retail. If it is OEM, you have no software. But, you can download it from the manufacturer's web site. It is for just that purpose. To move the OS from an old drive to the new one.

I've also heard on the grape vine that Powerquest's Drive Image is slightly more reliable than Norton's Ghost [even thought they have taken over powerquest]

Partition Magic can be used to copy a partition. Ghost can be used, drive image can be used...altho... drive image no longer exists it is now called Ghost ;-)

I use an old DOS version of ghost on a bootable floppy sometimes.

Well. it took a while but it worked. But I do seem a few weird things happening such as my DeadAim resetting as if it's my first time to use and my Norton anti-virus tells me to register again.

What did you use in the end?

Well, Partition Magic asked too many questions and had to complete many steps (about 5) to copy the partition and in the end the computer wouldn't boot with the new 'copied' harddrive. So I used the Maxtor software which can be booted from the CD, I formatted the new drive then copied the partition again onto this new drive and everything works fine now (except I at boot up I get a prompt to select which OS i want to use, both are the same WinXP).

If you want to get rid of that, I think you can look in your boot.ini file, and delete the relevant reference, or just go into Control Panel/System, Advanced, Bootup options, and make the choice screen show up for 1 second at boot,

Maxblast It can be found on Maxtor's website. It will work as long as it detects at least one maxtor drive in your system. You can download it for a bootable floppy or a bootable CD.
