Will this psu work?

I'm not sure about that... my g/f's Earthwatts 500 was unable to reliably power a 9850 with 2x 2gb RAM, 3 HDD, 7900GTO. No problems with an X2 CPU, and an OCZ 500w worked just fine with the 9850.

Perhaps the Earthwatts was defective...the Earthwatts is a better PSU than any 500W OCZ has. Any fully functioning Earthwatts should have absolutely no problem running the setup you described.

On what do you base this?

I'm not partial to either brand, as both Antec and OCZ have let me down in the past... Antec with some POS power supplies, and OCZ with fans emitting an annoying whine and not honoring MIR's.

because the two 500W units that OCZ has are based on either the FSP Epsilon platform, which isn't that great or a crappy Sirtec platform. The Earthwatts is either based on a very good Seasonic platform or a very good Delta platform.

It is not a measure of brand against brand...it is a measure of unit against unit.

Are you sure the motherboard was able to power the 9850, Gazelle? A lot of the first, cheaper sub-$100 motherboards didn't have the proper VRMs or cooling to handle the Phenom 9850.

Gazelle, it probably was the PSU being defective. Even a cheapo 500w would have no problem running that rig, so a EW500 (running properly at least) would definitely have no problem
