Hi, I was looking for a product that would silence my hard drive, it's a WD SE 80 gb, I found the Silentdrive. It looks like a good idea, but I'm worried about my HD frying in there, and doesn't 30 bucks seem kinda high for something like this?

Mine is at about 38 db, which drives me nearly insane, so yes. BTW I've heard that WD makes the loudest Hard Drives.

Something doesn't seem right... I've got 2 WD drives and I have to get within a foot of the case during boot up to hear the heads. Other than that I don't notice anything over the normal PS fan. Maybe in a very quiet environment it is different. I have Maxtors, too, and I can't say one is any louder than the other.

I also read somewhere that those things were coffins because of the heat build up. They don't breath all that well.

Yeah, I also hear these things are terrible as far as heating your drive. I suppose that on the plus side, your drive will be REAL quiet after it is baked and non functioning. ;) Seriously though, I can not hear my drives unless I listen really close. With the side panel off. I have one Maxtor box and one WesternDigital box.

I would not put a WD SE in a SilentDrive.

Stick with single platter drives, preferably 5400 RPM, if you want to use it.

You might want to call WD up and find out why its making the loud noise. They might even exchange it or something for you. As for me, I can't hear any of my WD drives except an old 1GB drive which was the best thing at the time. It spins at a whole 2400RPM! It might actually be 5400rpm but I don't think it matters on that old drive, its somewhere in our garage.
