I thought you can't put am2+ cpus like the ph II 940 in am3 boards as they don't have the memory controller for ddr3

So yeah, I believe the brand new AM3 CPUs will work in certain AM2+ boards (as long as those boards list compatibility of course), but not the other way around. An AM3 board will not work with AM2+ processors. Which is pretty bad since the best of the Phenom IIs are not socket AM3 but AM2+.

AM3 motherboards seem like they're only good if you really, desperately want DDR3, which doesn't even help in AMD's case.
