Will this laptop be ok for gaming?

I'm looking at getting an Averatec 6100HS which has a P4 3ghz HT, 512MB of Ram and a Mobile Radeon 9600. The review I have read says that it scored a score of 2,590 (1,024 by 768) in 3dmark 03. Just wondering if this laptop would be ok for casual gaming.. thinking maybe HalfLife 2/CS and possibly doom 3.

Thanks

What's the LCD display's native resolution?

at 10x7 - "fair" - you should be able to play the latest games (even Doom III, more-or-less; lowQ/most details off) . . . . 16x12 is limiting you - a lot - to older games. 😉

I believe its 1280x800 -- its a widescreen.. doubt i'd be able to run newer games at that res 🙁 -- do I absoultely have to run the game at the laptops native res?

Dah well, it's going to be primarily a Linux desktop for work purposes.. but I wouldn't mind sneaking a game or two in once in a while

Really, 12x8. . . . not the usual 12x9 or 12x10? (i know my Radeon supports that display . . .)

You can run it in a window or else it will be a bit 'blurry'.

Certainly FPS games through '02 . . . . maybe even Max Payne II (late '03) (edit . . . . Probably MP II - great engine!).

How much video RAM is there?

Damn that's expensive!

Is this one you are buying (or is "work" buying)?

I really don't see what the video RAM is (64/128MB) . . . . makes a difference.
it also doesn't give the screen res.

Keep in mind, that is a Canadian price.. it's around 1,200 USD which is a very good deal IMHO for the hardware it comes with.

I have a PDF of more detailed product specs. The video card has 64mb of dedicated ram. It only says: resolution (1200x800) -- doesn't specify if that is the native resolution or not, but I would assume it is

Couple things:

1. It's a DTR, which means it's gonna run hot. Be prepared for that
2. The 9600 isn't going to perform super in a laptop, because the mobility is a lower wattage version of it's desktop counterpart
3. Also because it's a DTR, power consumption is going to be fairly high, so don't plan on traveling much with it
4. It's gonna be heavy 🙂
5. A 4200 RPM HD is a bad idea. Try to get at least the 5400RPM drive, or if possible, the 7200RPM drive (since you plan on gaming)

I have about 15 or so laptops, so I'm pretty well versed on the subject. You could probably find a better gaming rig for the price (try www.armsystems.com).

Personally, for gaming, I would be limiting my search to mobility 9800 card laptops. I would sacrifice a little cpu for the extra power of the 9800.

There's only 1 laptop with the 9800 Mobility, and Dell has it. It's a beast, and it's not cheap. When Dell's exclusive runs out, you'll see them popping up elsewhere.

For those who want to know, it's the XPS model that has it.
