Will this hurt a CPU?

Sorry mods but I need to ask this. I just received and 1800+ thats suppost to do 2.3ghz+. Anyway I am suppost to trade my like new FX5200 for it and I was suppost to cross trade with him which I didn't because I lost communication with him for a couple days and was to scared to. Anyway I agreed to ship priority(which I haven't yet) with DC# and I asked him if he was and this is when I lost communication with him. Anyway he shipped it in a evenlope with padding around the CPU in a CPU case(not the best packaging but could have been worse). Doesn't get DC# and it only costs him 60 cents to ship it.

But thats not my concern. The CPU arrives with Arctic Silver II all over it all around the core on the little components around the core and even on the sides of the CPU. I am guessing he didn't read up on how to use the stuff because he used way to much. I heard artic silver was conductive and am afraid he ran it like this the whole time he had it and could have messed with it some? Should I just wipe the stuff off best I can and ship him my card or just ship it back to him. I wish he would have took the time to at least clean it.

Just want a few replies and this can be deleted.

AS isn't conductive, but its capacitative.

U should communicate with him and ask him if its ok for u to clean it so that u can test it out ... let it be his call

Even if it does post could it have done any damage to it that could shorten its life?

Clean and then try. I hate when people goop the crap outta their chips.

If communication has been slow, and shipping poor, I personally wouldn't feel bad about waiting a couple days to test before sending the video card. Make sure you PM and email the other party to let them know about this, even if they aren't responding.

I've seen some really gooped up CPUs as well. If it still works after cleaning, you're probably ok.

Clean the processor.... If it works, (It should) hold up your end of the deal and send the card.

Yeah, I'd feel pretty dirty receiving a processor in that kind of packaging but if it works, you should send your video card.

I hear ya. How much effort does it take to clrean that crap off before shipping it? It's common curtesy.

yeah I know. I am gonna test it out later today. I bet he wouldnt be to happy if I sent the FX with ASII all over it. Anyway I will post back on whether or not if it works.

Thx for the replies.

It posted fine but I noticed a pin on the bottom was bent slightly. I have to ease it back straight before I could get the CPU in there. Do you all think the CPU will be ok? I am gonna torture test it for a few days before I ship the video card. I ain't to happy with this at all.

What a nice person you are to cross trade with.

Aren't both parties suppose to ship their item(s) at the same time?

If it POSTS its fine, no need to be concerned. As for the AS3 on the CPU, some nail-polish remover is your best freind for dealing with that.

The bent pin is nothing, I received a 2.4c that had virtually every pin bent out of shape from a poor shipping job (got crushed between the two sides of the plastic clamshell). I bent them all back and it has been running at 3.6ghz ever since.

Sent the card, finish the deal, move on.

Jon...

You should send the person your video card NOW, not a few days from now. It really should have already been sent the same time as the processor.

The more you go on about this, the more it seems that you are trying to weasel out of your deal..

Sorry but when I ask someone how they plan on shipping and then not hear back from them in 2 days after asking that I will not ship. I thought he might have backed out. I think he only has 9 refs or so. Poor comunication I don't like and heck I havent heard from him all day today. When he did say he shipped he said he got DC# which he didnt. I'll send the card out tomorrow. But please don't try to tell me how to deal I have 189/0/0 refs and am a good trader on hear. Its just that if you spook me or give me a reason to not cross trade(disapear like he did for 2 days) then I have no problems.

I was just concerned about the ASII all over the CPU thats all. And was just curious if that would hurt it on down the road. Thx for the replies everything seems fine.

Okay, I take my insult back. I wouldn't have shipped either, if I didn't know that he had in fact shipped. But now that you have it, tomorrow will be soon enough, since this guy doesn't seem to be in a big hurry, anyway. Also, too much AS5 or AS3 or whatever thermal paste won't hurt a processor in any way, because it's thermally conductive, but not electrically conductive. Now, it may very well not overclock as high as he said it would, but that's a chance you're taking when you're dealing with used computer parts that are bought over the internet, you have to take the word of someone you don't know as to how well the part performs.

Yeah, I know. That's why I always just save my money, no matter how long it takes, to buy it new. If it doesn't work, it's a simple RMA, assuming you bought it from the right place.

It's only a 5200. They're pieces o poop anyway. Send it away before the imbarrasment of owning such a card eats into your self respect ;)

Well I tested the chip and its rock solid 1800+@2.3Ghz 1.7v. So it doesnt seem like a bad chip. Again was just curious about the ASII thing. The card is on it way to him. Thx for the replies.
