I want to get an Opty 165 soon. But I would like to wait a little bit before getting new memory, PSU ect.

So the question is: Can I combine an Opteron 165, DFI LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D and a SAPPHIRE 100143 Radeon X1300PRO 256MB with the components that I already have in my current system (see my signature) and put togather something usable for now? I am esspecially worried about the PSU and memory.

I'd up the psu to an Antec NeoHE 500w. Ram can be salvaged, but I suggest buying new ones (if you are going to overclock). Get a 6800gs instead of a x1300pro

I plan on getting a new PSU and RAM in several weeks. I just want to know if the above system will be functional enough to get me by until then. I won't OC till I get new RAM and PSU.

If your psu has at least 22 amps (hey... headroom...) on the +12v rail you should be fine.

Whats your basis for recommending the 6800GS? If he's a big gamer, the advice is sound .... but if he's a video encoder who games a bit, he'd be much happier with the X1K series from ATI. However, for the little bit more they cost, I'd recommend an X1600 over the X1300. The X1600 comes with 12 pipes, while I've yet to find an X1300 with more than 4 pipes.

So, lets put it this way:

Gaming - 6800 GS
Video Work - X1600

Lets just match the card with what we will (primarily) be using it for.

Edit: Either way, you will really be pushing your PSU with either card.

I do Video Editing/Encoding and don't game very much.

Also, Are the following PSUs any good?

Antec SmartPower 2.0 SP-500 ATX12V 500W
FSP Group (Fortron Source) FSP550-60PLN EPS12V 550W

either one of those PSU's should do you good. Go to DFI-Street and check out the PSU thread. They are both on it.

I have one DFI running on a $87 Enermax 565 VE-FMA 535W PSU and another DFI running on a $65 Antec SP 2.0 500W- no problems with either.
