I am building my 1st PC, YAY! I just wanted your guys input on how well this system will do in an overclocked state. LMK your opinions.

Here are the specs:

Chieftec Dragon Case with Side window (white)
Abit NF7-S rev 2.0 mobo
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ Barton (planning on OC'ing to 3200+ speeds)
Cooler Master Aero 7 LITE (beats out the Aero 7+ in temps)
Corsair XMS 3200 (1 stick of 512)
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
2x Maxtor 40gb Hard Drives (Have them layin around already)
Samsung 12x DVD-Rom Dirve
48x24x48x CDR-W Drive
Klipsch Promedia 5.1 Speakers using Onboard Soundstorm
Achieve 550 watt PSU
Blue UV Rounded ATA cables
2 Blacklights inside case
UV Case fans
Total of 5 Case fans

Will this sytem be able to OC to 3200+ speeds? LMK. Thanks

-Spencer

never heard of Achieve PSUs... If you're going to build a system like that get the recommended (at least around here) SK-7\80mm HSF combo.

EDIT: Why 2 40GB drives??? If you want to do that get 2 Raptors, or at least a bigger drive for the same money.

great sytem. 1 stick of ram is fine as nforce2 boards dont benefit too much from DCDDR. i would get bigger HDD's and a 52X liteon CDRW

LOL, thanks for all your responces so far, Ok here is my setup, I have a 24/7 Cruncher, its a Dell 8100 P$ 1.4, 128mb ram, but it has a 160GB hard drive in it, Thats my comp for downloads, i have wireless network, so this is mainly my gaming rig. I also have a 120gb hard drive in my modded XBOX. Im all set for storage, plus I have the 2 HD's just layin around collecting dust, so might as well put them to use.

-Spencer

BTW, I think this system will be good for longer than 6 months.

you could actually just go out and get a 120 gig hard drive and it wouldent be much more then the 2 40s

And make sure to get a good RAID card, like one from 3Ware. They have a full hardware IDE RAID card that isn't too expensive and it really kicks much a$$.

Also, while nForce2 doesn't make as much use of DCDDR as 865/875/7205 boards, I'd still recommend going DCDDR. Why not use it if you have it? And honestly, some of the new games like having lots of RAM, future games may require it. Get more RAM, it won't hurt and it's not gonna bust your bank.

Anyways, I'd also leave the bling bling (bling sucks) out of the computer. It's not a Honda for cripes sake.

the point he's making is that
he already has 2 40gig HD's!
He doesn't need any more storage and doesn't need to waste any more $ on HD.

Stop pressuring the poor guy ;>

It looks good, but you don't need a 550W PSU to power that system. I bought an Antec SLK3700AMB with the 2500+ and NF7-S Rev 2.0 (used my previous DDR333 2x256Mb sticks from Crucial) and it runs at 3200+ (400Mhz FSB as well as overclocked memory) easily for more than 2 weeks on end. And it doesn't just sit there...I do a lot of stuff on it. I would recommend getting a Thermalright SLK-800A for that and an 80mm fan on top of it instead. However, I bumped it down to 2800+/333Mhz FSB because I found the performance increase to be negligible...if any drop in performance at all. Those Aero 7's are huge in height (though cool very well), so I went with the SLK-800A and a case that used 120mm case fans (1 in front and 1 in the rear) and the latest Arctic Silver paste. After a game of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory, it is at 109 F...so it runs very cool.

The Antec 350W SmartPower PSU that came in the case was more than enough for the system too. I use a GF4 Ti4200 128Mb, 52x Samsung CDRW, 16x Pioneer DVD-ROM, 80Gb Seagate HDD, 30.7Gb Maxtor HDD in it. My buddy was curious, so we put his Radeon 9700 Pro inside it and ran it...ran very very smoothly. I would say to go with a 350-400W PSU, 450W if you can't find decent 400W ones. My preference is Antec and Enermax, but the latest Anandtech review shows there are other good ones out there (I stick to what I know is good, though). I just thought i'd share my experiences and point out that the power supply is overkill. If you're curious, those are 120mm case fans but those are the only 2 in there, aside from the 80mm ThermalTake Smart Case Fan II on the Heatsink and the PSU fans of course.

Good luck with the new system!

Edit: I agree, utilizing the Dual Channel is a good idea. I admit that there can be a negligible difference, but games will like it in the future. Personally, I noticed a huge difference from the old KT400 I had before it was fried by lightning. You will easily be able to hit 3200+ speeds :)

Is he going to hear it over his case fans? :D
I don't know...I have a friend who has a 52x lite-on and it didn't sound too loud to me. I mean it wasn't quiet at all, but it wasn't louder than my old 12/10/32 TDK VeloCD or the 48x one in the other computer.

I personally am going to get a Samsung one with the 8Meg cache...some people recommended it on here and places gave it high marks. After a lightning strike to our house, we have replaced everything by now (its been a month) but I still haven't been able to buy a new CD-RW, since my poor old TDK died in it :(. I don't have much experience w/ the 52x Lite-Ons though, so I could be wrong :)

Yea, thanks so much for your input. This is basically my base system now, and when it needs to be better I will upgrade and make it better, but I feel it will be a good system for a while.

Personally, I would go with a Intel System considering you've got a 800Mhz FSB but...I cant complain really.

Cooler Master Aero 7 LITE (beats out the Aero 7+ in temps)

I find that EXTREMELY hard to belive, isnt that heatsink aluiminum? I find it interesting how everyone wants him to get another stick of memory. Nforce Dual-Channel is pretty much just hype. I would look at getting a different powersupply personally, I say just Get a Antec Case, for $110 you cant go wrong with very good powersupply and a nice case from Antec. As for the DVD and CD-RW, it would prolly cost the same and maybe be cheaper if you were two get a CD-RW/DVD-R Drive, I'd recommend a Samsung Drive as the perform well and dont sound like rocket Liteon varients.

Check ouy the review at http://www.datafuse.net/aerolite.php

BTW, I also have the 2 cd drives just layin around also. Considering that I have only spent $540 (minus the vid card that I got for a present) for the entire system is insane, I think this is hands down the best system for the money I had to spend

It's entirely feasible but certainly not guaranteed. My older stepping Barton 2500+ exceeds 3200+ in overall MHz but I haven't had it at 200MHz FSB yet. Maybe I'll buy some PC3200 and try again for the magic FSB speed.

I'd say 1 gig of RAM, MORE HARD DRIVE SPACE, and elimination of all those case mods. But that's just me.

9800Pro is costly, but if you need one, I guess you can get one.

Heatsink: personally I think the SLK-900 looks awesome. Not sure if it would fit though. If it did, you could toss on a 92mm fan (those have really good noise/CFM ratios, or if you're not concerned with noise, a 92mm high speed could blow tons and tons of air).

BTW that's a lot of case fans. You're ok with noise, we assume?
