Hi guys and girls

My old motherboard went and died on me. The rest of my system is probably OK, but I have a hard time finding a replacement motherboard. A friend of mine wants to upgrade his rig, and has offered his old mobo, CPU and GFX card to me.

My old rig:
P4 2,4 Ghz
1,5 gig of RAM
Radeon 9800 Pro AGP
MSI FIS2R mobo

My friend's offer:
AMD 3800+
Geforce 6600 GT PCI-E
Abit mobo
No RAM, but according to him I can reuse my own.

What do you guys think? How will the performance of the new rig be compared to the old?

Overall it would be a decent upgrade. The processer is a good bit faster, so if you encode videos, encrypt files, etc you will notice a marked improvement. The video card is a decent step up as well, so game performance will increase.

How much is he offering you the parts for?

He is still considering how much he want ;-) He is quite a good friend of mine, so I think he will offer a good price. He mentioned a "symbolic price" :)

You would not be unhappy with the parts he is offering! If you got em for less than $150 you've got a friend! If you get em for less than $100 you've got a good friend!

I suspected as much. However, I cannot fit my AGP card in a PCI-E board. I might consider getting another video card later.

They're selling 7600GS's, 7800GS's, along with X1950 Pro's in AGP. And a couple of companies made 7600GT's in AGP, but they always sold out the second they came back in stock. You'd probably have to buy a used one, if you want an AGP 7600GT.

don't buy from a friend, you don't want to risk damaging your friendship!

The point is, my old motherboard is dead, so I have no use for an AGP card.

Thanks for your concern, but we are talking $100-$200 max, so I think we will be OK.

He asks 1200 kr. (about $200) for it. I think I will go for it.

(Prices in Denmark are about 60%-80% higher in Denmark).
