I plan on possibly buying either the Phenom II X4 or an Intel Core Duo in the near future. I'm really waiting for quad cores to become more commonplace so that I can snag one cheaper. I just want to be able to play GTA IV and a lot of the newer games, because my current card, Nvidia 7600GS, can't run anything modern anymore.
you have to be joking putting a 9800gtx+ in that system. I am sure plenty of idiots will say how you will get a big jump over your 7600gs but overall you really are just wasting your time. a single core 2.0 Sempron and 1 gig of ram is not even going to allow you to play many modern games at all. just build you a new pc instead of wasting any time or money with that system if modern games are your concern.
That's essentially what I'm doing little by little. I'm just waiting for Quad Cores to dip in price.
dip to what? at what price are you going to pull the trigger? no point in going little by little with that system since it is way too slow to even justify using a decent card for a few months. that card will just be wasted and by the time you get a new pc better cards for the same money will be out.
You need to stop telling people what they have to do.
Can you not read? He said he is upgrading this computer in the near future. Prices aren't going to drop significantly by the end of the year.
Just offer him suggestions. Telling him what to do is bullish and brash.

Have you considered buying the Athlon II X4 620? It's a great deal and it will run GTAIV smoother than an Intel Core 2 Duo. For $100 it's a great chip, and you'll have the option to upgrade to a Phenom II X4 should you really need that extra performance. But plan on buying the mobo, CPU, and RAM at the same time, because you can't reuse any of those you have now.
