Will this 400W PSU work with GeForce 9800 GTX+?

I'm looking at the PNY VCG98GTXPXPB GeForce 9800 GTX+ 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 card and just bought a OCZ 400W OCZ400SXS power supply. One concern I have with this card is that it says that it needs a 500W or higher power supply with the 12V current rating of 26A. I've been out of the loop for a while, so I'm not quite sure what this means. The PSU does have 12V power supply plugs on it, but I don't know about the 26A part. Can anyone advise?

Also, I'm running an old motherboard (Abit NV-8) with PCI Express 1.0 for the time being. This card is PCI Express 2.0 based, but I was reading that PCI Express 2.0 is backwards compatible, but it just won't run at full 2.0 speeds. Can anyone confirm that the card will still work as well?

what is the rest of your system? how many amps on the 12v rail does that psu have?

btw, I'm currently using a 520w psu to run a highly oc'd quad with a gtx 260 on a system that is used for heavy gaming and runs 4 instances of seti@home 24/7. I think my gtx 260 box recommended a 600w+ psu. 🙂 The amps on the 12v rail is what matters, the 400w tells us nothing.

The card will work in your motherboard.

That power supply is enough; it claims to be able to put out 31A on the +12V rails, which is really good.

It should work, especially with that slower CPU. I'm using a Corsair 450W for my system. However it has a single +12V rail at 33A, where as yours has two, one at 14A and one at 17A.

You'll have to be *very* careful to balance the load between the two separate rails. 14A at 12V is only 168W, which is barely enough for the video card alone. If you put everything on that rail, you'll surely overload it.

You might also want to consider the 4850 instead. It only draws 110W max vs the 9800GTX+ at 145W. Also, the 5770 is faster than both, supports DX11, and has a TDP of only 108W. That would make your system more future proof and it might save you from having to get a bigger PSU if you go with a 125W CPU later.

Apparently, this PSU doesn't come with two 6 pin adapters. I don't know why it says that in the manual, but it I opened the box up and looked at the power supply and found that it only has one. This GeForce card claims that it comes with a Molex -> 6 pin PCI-E adapter, although some people claim that PNY has removed them from the boxes and said they'll send it to them if they need it, but when they call to get it they won't send it to them. If I use a Molex -> 6 pin PCI-E adapter, should I be ok?

I am sure plenty of idiots will say how you will get a big jump over your 7600gs but overall you really are just wasting your time. a single core 2.0 Sempron and 1 gig of ram is not even going to allow you to play many modern games smoothly at all. heck that doenst even meet the minimum requirements just play in many cases. just build or buy you a new pc instead of wasting any time or money with that system if modern games are your concern.

If you plan on buying CPU/mobo/ram soon I would consider the upcoming Gigabyte P55A<----This one will have SATA 3 and USB3.

I think the SATA3 will really pan out when SSDs get even faster. (Apparently the large 3.5" form factor OCZ model is being held back to SATA 2 speeds through its internal RAID controller)

Have you considered buying the Athlon II X4 620? It's a great deal and it will run GTAIV smoother than an Intel Core 2 Duo. For $100 it's a great chip, and you'll have the option to upgrade to a Phenom II X4 should you really need that extra performance. But plan on buying the mobo, CPU, and RAM at the same time, because you can't reuse any of those you have now.

can you not read because i clearly address the part about him upgrading? stop taking only parts of my comments and trying to start shit with me. with a really low end single core cpu and 1gb of system ram it would be silly to stick a decent card in there even for even a few months. he knows he needs a new pc so thats where his attention and money should really be focused. buying a card that his system cant come close to even using while he waits several months for prices to hopefully drop on cpus doesnt make sense.

Do we know what he does on his PC besides playing games? If he is just doing word processing and websurfing most of the time then maybe a new video card is not such a bad first step.

I think it's a matter of income and spending habits. For some people it's easier to spend a few hundred every couple of months for a while than to cough up $1000+ at once for a complete system overhaul, even if the latter is more "right". Other might just prefer to spend their money that way.

I know some advise against using molex-PCI-e adapters but I haven't heard of them causing any problems.

Yes, the Athlon II X4 can be had for about $99, but it will be slower than the original Phenom I. Games like big caches and high clock speeds - the X3 720 is a better choice except for heavy multi taskers or those who use a lot of heavily threaded software. Even then it can almost make up for the missing core thanks to the unlocked multiplier and high cache to core ratio.

I just got this for my cousin's new rig. There are plenty of deals on newegg and elsewhere, you're looking at around $250 for cpu/mobo/ram, look for combo discounts. I was sold on a gigabyte 785g mobo but ended up getting a combo deal on an ecs blackops 790gx instead for just a few $$ more. It was well worth the $$.

I don't know how much that SATA 3 feature would cost, but you are probably right in that it will add a good premium to the total.

With hardware power at least doubling every generation (based on die shrinks alone) it does pay to have everything matching in the sweet spot as far as value goes.

For the record, I'm only an occasional gamer. GTA IV and Ghostbusters were the only two games that caught my attention lately. Other than that, I haven't played games in quite some time. This is why I never went all out with my machine, because it's mostly used for websurfing, development and the occasional hot game. I used to upgrade my computer every 18 months when I lived at home, but since I've been on my own for nearly 5 years, I've only upgraded once. That few hundred dollars can be better suited paying for gas, food or on my girlfriend 🙂 I'm anticipating some good deals coming out in about a month with the holiday season approaching and everyone being desperate for sales.

First of all, GTA IV doesn't run well on my machine because my video card only has 128mb of ram on it. The memory meter in the game shows about 126mb of it being used on the default minimum settings. Obviously, with 512mb of memory and a video card with a core clock speed that is probably 4x higher than what I have, it'll run a bit better. Will it run at Xbox 360 levels? Probably not. Do I really care? No. As long as it looks decent and I can play it for the time being, that's all that matters.

Second of all, how do you know what mine or anyone else's financial situation is? If you knew anything about money, you would know that cars and computers are two money pits that depreciate to high hell soon after you buy them. I can go out there and buy a high gaming rig right now if I wanted to, but why spend all that money when I can lowball it and get the results that I need? I understand your thinking, why waste the money on it now if you can wait a month or so and get a more powerful one at the same price when you're ready to buy a new mobo/cpu/RAM combo? The answer to that is simple: I haven't come across any hot deals yet on these combos and haven't jumped on any yet. Maybe there will be one next week. Or the week after. Or next month. By then, this card will probably be back at full price and I would have gotten screwed out of the $30 rebate. I've always built my computers on the cheap and have gotten about 3 1/2 years lifespan between upgrades until I absolutely need to upgrade again. That's more money in my pocket to spend on better things than depreciating assets.
