I thought the government would not fail to pay anyone their benefits because of this? That's what we're being told, that this whole debt ceiling issue is meaningless because the government can operate for a long time without it and no one will go without. If so, why even speculate about rioting?

Yep we should cut those on the dole, anyone drawing a government salary including those in Washington, active military, defense contractors, etc... However those recieving bennies from SS and Medicare are NOT on the dole, they are recieving EARNED benifits from seperately funded programs that actually have nothing to do with deficit spending.

The republicans would love for you to believe that paying SS and medicare benifits is deficit spending but thats just misdirection. Is there problems with the long term solvency of these programs? Abosolutely, but linking these problems to our deficit spending problem is republican subtrafuge in an attempt to attack these social programs that they hate and the majority of Americans love. Claiming these programs are a part of our spending problem is just plain wrong.

The republicans? You must have conveniently forgotten when Obama threatened SS payments may not be made if the debt ceiling is not raised.
