Will there be a new standard in cooling for computer components?

Seriously, is air cooling really enough? Sure AMD just released it's cooler CPU but we all know that AMD's CPU's will get hotter once again. We already know that the P4's are hot.

Consider these questions:
Will water blocks eventually be standard cases?
How about "phase change heat transfer" components?

the cpu race will slow down. Allowing process technology to catch up to the CPU heat. The cpu , is quickly becoming not the most expensive part of the computer, so spending more money on an exotic cooling system is dumb. Besides, people (general public) are not demanding higher speed CPUS anyways, so this gives intel and AMD time, to slow down their ramps since people are not gonna buy more if they speed it up anyways, based on last quarters sales figures, where amd went up like 300mhz in a quarters and people paidl ess.

I sincerely believe air cooling will be the standard for awhile. It's cheap and it's easy for design. There will probably new material to be used for HS but I doubt there will be a radical change in the fluid use for cooling. And yes, hans007 is quite correct about the slow down although it all depends on software technology too.

Some people spend around $100 just in cooling $60 heatsink, $40 fan adapter, $15 fan

I mean i'm sure someone could design a very good, very efficient water cooling system and sell it for let's say $80.

There is so much out there that we can use to absorb all of our heat.

Quickfingerz I don't think in the general PC area there will be anything but air cooling for quite some time. Take into account that the die is always getting smaller along with less voltage, this means less heat.

For the small group of overclockers like us here at AnandTech (not to say we are the only ones) water coolers and other methods like peltiers are a must, but to the general population, its overkill.
