Will there be a big performance increase when I upgrade my V3 2000 to a Radeon 64MB?

well I doubt you like to use the 2000 in QIII above 800x600. The Radeon will be able to do it in whatever resolution your monitor can. you could try using some of that extra power in better aliasing, but Radeon fsaa is rather ineffectual. i am sure the current releases are more suited to the Radeon than the 2000.

Hard to compare really, the Radeon absolutely blows in 16bit performance where you are stuck(though it is nearly the exact same speed running in 32bit which you should definately leave it in with a Radeon). It should be a bit faster in most games, a lot faster in others even in 16bit although the big advantage is the very sizeable jump in image quality. The V3 was the worse in 3D image quality even compared to other boards from the same generation, let alone anything current.

Got a wake up call the other day when I was playing Giants with one of my buddies on a LAN, he had a V3 and I had my GF DDR, he thought his looked fine(upgrade not too long ago from an ATi mach64<shudder>), I though it looked very, very poor- washed out, dithered, missing all sort of features, slow as hell(though his CPU didn't help that out any), blurriness bordering on obscene, horrendous texture quality and forced to run in 16bit color.

I played Q3 with 1024x768, with about 42fps in timedemo1. But actually, I don't play Q3 too much. What I prefer is all the EA Sports Games, like NBA Live, NHL and Fifa (all 2001). Will the image look really THAT much better in those games?

I upgraded from a V3 3000 to a Radeon 64 with a PIII 733 (I'm now on a 933). There is a very large difference. Q3 is much better looking, much faster at higher res to boot. Same with UT. It looks MUCH better in D3D than it did in Glide and is much smoother. This was quite a surprise since I thought Glide was better for this game. I didn't have Giants when I had The V3, but I don't doubt what Ben says. As far as 16 bit goes, I don't have very many 16 bit games. The two I have are Quake2 and Half-Life. Both run very well and look much better than they did on the Voodoo 3. There is not a single game I have that didn't get a sizeable improvement with the upgrade.

Edit Just saw your EA post. I'm a FPS kind of guy and dont play the EA sports games. I would imagine they will run well, but have no first had exp with them.

Thanx oldfart. I think I gonna buy me this one, if my computer-budget for the next month isn't up already 😉 I also think that I shouldn't wait for the GF3, cuz it's just way too expensive for me, and the Radeon won't drop I guess.

Thanx for the input.

Hey i wondering the same thing. Right now i have a v3 2000 pci, and im going to a radeon 64mb ( its in the mail). i want to play games at 1024X786X32 ( thats as high as my monitor goes).

I have the giants demo and i get about 25fps in 800X600 with everything turned up high. ill post my radeon stats when i get it installed next week. i hope i didnt was my money on a video card that wont be much faster than my v3🙂

I believe those EA sports games are Direct3D, just the place where Radeon FSAA usually does not work! i would go for the GTS unless you can find a cheap voodoo5- you sound like you have the cash. those games have been specifically mentioned in a review as blowing away the reviewer with V5 fsaa.

<< i hope i didnt was my money on a video card that wont be much faster than my v3🙂 >>

To say there'll be a substantial speed increase might be understating the case. The visuals you'll also notice are rather stunning. That seems to be the number 1 comment from friend's that I've upgraded to the Radeon, they can't believe how good things look. You'll not be disappointed.

TravisBickle:
uhm, I think you misunderstood... I don't have the money 😉

I could get the Voodoo 5 64MB Bulk and the Radeon 64MB Retail for the same price. Which should I go for? I really play a lot these EA Sports Games. How long will the Voodoo 5 last? Would the Radeon last longer? I really don't know what I should do........ GTS, Radeon or V5... just no idea. Which card would last the longest from now on?

Thanx a lot.

Edit: Anyone has any Screenshots from NBA Live 2000 or 2001 with the Voodoo 5 with FSAA enabled?

Thanx a lot. These were also the one I've found. But I only have seen 1 Screenshot from NBA 2000, and it wasn't soooo exciting to me. Hhhmmmmm, if there is somebody out with NBA 2001 and a Voodoo 5 5500... could you maybe make screenshots with FSAA enabled and disabled? I think I should better start another thread with another title 😉

But thanx so far.

I had the V3 2000 and when I upgraded to the Duron from my old p100, wow. UT in Glide was awesome, and fast. Then I got my AIW. After reading some posts by OF and others I was able to get OpenGL with the high rez textures OMG, I didn't think you could beat Glide in this game, but D3D looks better and runs faster, but I was watching my son play in OpenGl,(I didn't have time to check it before after I changed the entries in my ini file before I went to bed) It looked like a different game! I don't know if its the textures or just that OpenGl actually works now...but Wow!

I loved my V3 but I don't miss it now a bit. You wont be dissappointed.

Yes, UT looks AMAZING.. I was playing in 1600x1200 in OpenGL with 16 bots in the Gothic Map. My avg fps were around 30-35, still playable... It is is a bit dark but looks so good. I will post screenshots SOON.

what voodoo are you talking about? voodoo5 i believe have decent graphics, especially with FSAA. Radeon sucks with driver support, and NVidia sucks with image quality. Get radeon LE because its at an awesome price but if you run win2k you can run to some troubles such as the refresh rate going down to 60mhz in games.
