Will their be a WoW Killer?

Ok, I was heavily addicted to WoW about 2 years ago got bored of it, I waited for AOC to come out... it sucked... Warhammer was pretty bad too... WoW is still 8 million strong and it's been around since I was a freshman in high school. Many companies hype up their games and they end up failing do you think EA's Starwars MMO will take WoW down? Or do you think Blizzard is planning on making a WOS (World of Starcraft)

Diablo 3 arguably, even though it's not an MMO I think it will syphon off a lot of WoW's players. Besides that, I don't think there's anything else on the horizon that even poses a threat to WoW's dominance.

Yeah unfortunately I think the only company that could topple WoW is blizzard. I gave up hope on MMOs after warhammer I have just been playing Xbox360 waiting for something to come out. That and Darkfall doesn't look so promising either.

This.

Eventually there will but I would bet it is like WoW 2, I can't imagine WoS would do it. I had high hopes of AoC, but it was meh at best. I still play and if they keep adding new content I am happy.

WoW will die off with the release of one of the following

World of Warcraft 2
World of Stracraft
World of Diablo

Koudelka summed up my feelings perfectly. I'm currently "playing" WoW, but really it's more to pass the time than anything. It's not horrible, but nothing stands out about it. I doubt there will be a "WoW Killer" more of a slow decline as people leave for newer MMO's that appeal to them. I'm thinking(actually more "hoping") that the "successful" MMO's of the future will target smaller segments of the gaming population and try to tailor their games to that segment, rather than trying to appeal to everyone.

Time alone will kill WoW. After countless years and expansions, they all die eventually.

Creep will eventually kill WoW. Take a look at any of the old MUDs, the thing that kills them all is creep. Eventually the need to make the next addition better then the last becomes unsustainable and people get disgusted having to grind for 10000 hours to earn enough skulls of the Lich King to build the Super Double Legendary Epic Sword of God Himself that can one shot any warrior/warlock/druid multiclass character by doing a *MASSIVE* crit for 1 billion points of damage.

I think a lot of that depends on the combination of keeping things balanced and keeping the creative aspects and interest in that creativity high enough. Expansions do not always need to be "better" as much they need to be "different" because different is often all that players really want.

However, I do agree that WoW cannot last forever. That is obvious. The real question is what game will kill it, when will that game come out, and who the game is developed by.

I would drop WoW in a god damn heartbeat for Universe of Starcraft 😛

Not me. Starcraft was nowhere near as good as any of the warcraft games.

Decent game, but nowhere near as good as Total Annihilation or Red Alert.

A Star Wars MMORPG could take WOW down but EA is all about raping people of their money, not producing the best product, so a MMORPG made by them will never be that great. It was the same with SOE. All they cared about was the bottom line so they would never take any risks.

I disagree, and I've done enough development on MUDs to know. Here is a little though experiment for you. Imagine that Blizzard put in a new instance that had NO new equipment in it. Would people still go to that instance? Maybe once, and many not even that once. For the vast majority of players the point of exploring new instances is to get new equipment. If there is no upgrade for them there they will not want to put in the effort to go there. So you are always having to put in better equipment to lure the players into your new content.

voted no because I consider a WoW killer to be a competing MMO

the closest will be Bioware's Star Wars MMO, but WoW has just gotten too big now and will always have the low PC requirements advantage over new upcoming MMOs

however, I do believe that whenever Blizzard releases Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3, there will be a noticeable impact on WoW's subscribership

All you're describing is mudflation.

Blizzard has done an excellent job of making sure new items exist for the purpose of enabling new content. If anything, they're doing the opposite of what you describe in the last sentence, and using the content as the lure that keeps people on the gear treadmill. Want to see the next raid instance? Better get the current stuff on farm so that you'll have the gear to manage the next raid.

Where I think mudflation and Blizzard's methods of dealing with it will eventually stop WoW's growth is in new player subs. Even with the changes to speed up leveling in the old world, bringing a new character up from nothing to level 80 is a daunting task.

The KOTOR MMO will more than likley flop. I say that as a huge Star Wars fan. It'll be interesting to see how Bioware handles Jedi in an MMO, because SOE completely botched it (I had a DJK before the first round of sweeping changes to SWG, so I can speak from first-hand experience there).

I do think the KOTOR MMO stands a solid chance, but thats all in the hands of the developers and the publishers.. lets see if they dont hurry it out the door and botch it up with an irreversable reputation, like what happened to Vanguard.

Hell, i'd play a clone of EQ even at graphical settings 10 years back if someone made one with a fresh storyline/setting. I'm just tired of these underpopulated-solo-to-max-level-never-see-anyone-else-ingame games... buggy as all hell and dont work as intended 🙂

Yes, I pretty much meant that when I used the term balance. I was referring to overall game balance. Not just classes.

You make a good point about the level system though. It cannot last forever in its current state, but I also think that Blizz is created enough to integrate something into the game in order to overcome that problem too. However, they may not ever have to worry about that issue. I believe that a new game will come along before that sort of thing gets so out of control that their number of subs steadily declines. That new game may very well be by Blizz too. We'll see.
