Will the Zen Based FM3 CPU work on AM2+ board? like AM3 did on AM2+?

Except that Godavari brings no actual performance increase. True, the clocks are like 100 Mhz higher (on the CPU side) at best....but clock for clock it's the same performance.

The only actual advantage is that it's supposedly a tiny bit better on the voltage side of things and might actually overclock a bit better for some people. That's about it. 🙁

I don't. Aside from the reasons already provided in response, the consumer market is shifting more towards laptops and their kin. Expect AMD to spend most of their time working on that segment.

The only really good thing about Kaveri refresh is that we went from ~$180 7850k with a typical max overclock of 4.5 GHz to ~$145 7870k with a typical max overclock of 4.6-4.7 GHz. Plus those 7870ks are soldered so no need to even think about delidding them, except for direct-die cooling. You might get some better GPU clocks and/or NB clocks or you might not, it's kind of a mixed bag.

Are we sure they won't do this? I think it was confirmed by anandtech? or is it a case that AMD don't want to excite the public and hence try to sell out as much 860K and 760K, seeing that Carrizo is so much better if people knew it was coming to desktop they would simply not buy the older models?

So AMD has plans on doing this but want to get rid of older CPUs first?

Carrizo is a very focused product TDP wise. The reason you aren't seeing a 960k Athlon based on it is that it would likely perform worse than the model it would replace, which is why Godavari is a thing. I'd certainly recommend reading through the whole article, but this slide (http://images.anandtech.com/doci/9319/Slide 9 - Power Frequency curve with libraries.png) from Ian's Carrizo article nails this point.
 
Yea...I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to change their socket naming scheme completely for Zen and all this stuff is just a placeholder.


How about the "FX 1" socket? xD Then every CPU you buy is FX *evil grin*
 
Those of you who remember the 386sx processors know that the sx is for sucks. So the FX is for . . . hmm. Nevermind.
