Will the stock HSF be fine for unlocked cores on X2 555BE?

Since I already got an X2 720BE and didn't have luck with unlocking it, I am thinking about trying my luck with the X2 555BE.

I do not plan to overclock (if I do, that will be a separate thread)

I have read some forums where users have indicated that unlocking the 3rd and/or 4th core on the X2 555BE raises the temperature and is not something that is accounted for by the stock HSF. However, I see plenty of people talking about the stock HSF that they are using (albeit a crappy one).

So the question is: will I need a new HSF or not to just unlock the cores?

This may also impact whether I get another X3 or the X2 555BE. If I have to buy a new HSF, i'll probably just get the X3 since I am guaranteed 3 cores without doing anything and the C3 versus C2 is not a distinction since I don't have the time to learn how to overclock.

if u dont overclock, then yes it will be fine.

if you do overclock, then no, you need a new sink regardless, unless its a very light overclock.

I keep my home fairly warm (75F) and the stock cooler is worrisome. With mobo/cpu just on a test bench (ok the motherboard box) at X4 3.2 it gets up to 62+. At X3 3.2 it gets up to ~54. So I would invest in aftermarket cooling.

The stock cooler from AMD is meh. I have a Thermalright TRUE on mine and it's really good for it, 3.8 at 38ish degrees.

I would upgrade, even the cheapest aftermarket cooler will be better then what's included.

It's all about stability when unlocking cores; eliminate as many variables as possible.

If it unlocks, see how far you can under-volt. The PhIIs tend to be over-volted a touch at stock.

I can't read temp when X2 555BE unclocked to X4 B55 BE.
Only from BIOs I can see the CPU temp.

I use the TMP2 in HWMonitor --- don't really know what sensor it monitors but it seems to follow core (heat shield?) temps from 'locked-unlocked'.
