Will the sticky low/mid be enough for me?

90 percent use will be for general Web surfing and movie streaming to my ps3. However, I do game in the winter months when I'm bored.

Games I've played in the past :
Cs go
Starcraft
The walking dead
Battlefield
World of tanks

Can reuse my case, ssd and probably the psu, although my computer had been giving me issues lately, but Im pretty sure it was the Gpu. Maybe psu was going, too. It's about 5 years old.

Definitely need cpu, gpu, mobo and potentially ram if I'm getting a ddr3 based system.

Probably enough on most if you turn down the settings some. But Battlefield can be tough. And Battlefield what?

And can you wait a month or two or three on the GPU?

Bf 4 but played like.... Twice. Im just too busy most days to game, but I still enjoy it time to time.

Yes I can, just trying to get a feel for things and prices. I can spend more on a gpu than the 950 in the sticky since I'm reusing a few things.

OK. The thing to do is probably:

1. Wait for the GTX 1060, or the RX 480, or the (hypothetical, but likely) GTX 1050 or RX 470.
2. See if you have enough money at that point to get one of those and an i5 6500.

Okay. Is this an October ish release date?

If you mean the RX480, it will be released on June 29 starting at $199.

The GTX 1060 and possbile GTX 1050 would most likely be released in response to AMD's new card and how well it does at $199.

Oh... So why was I asked if I could wait a few months? That's in 2 weeks.

I was behind the times [thread=2476721]by a few hours[/thread]. Looks like the RX 480 and 470 launch will be a hard launch, unlike the soft 1080/1070 launch.

Plus, until you can read an actual no-doubt-about-it reviews, it's tough to say how good the RX 480 card will be.

It sounds promising if they can deliver on their claims, but it wouldn't be the first or last time tech companies have "puffed up" the performance of their products.

Well, I can certainly afford to wait 3 weeks or so to find out, there's not a huge rush. My current rig is currently in a storage unit bc I recently moved.

I believe the NDA (non disclosure agreement) from AMD expires on the day the cards launch, so I imagine most review sites will publish them on that day.

Definitely the i5 if the budget allows.

Okay.

So I just went online and looked up "2016 video games" to see what's coming out this year. For PC, I'd probably be looking at maaaaaaaybe COD and maaaaaybe Dark Souls 3, and probably Dead Island 2. Most the titles I'm really interested in, I'd rather play on ps4, like Hitman and Watchdogs.

With my original post about games I used to play... Is having the quad core and spending an extra almost $100 worth it?

You could buy a i5-6500 instead of the 6600k if you aren't overclocking, and wanted to save a few dollars.

DX12 will utilize more cores in gaming, and it will be important going forward. If you are buying the RX 480, that is a DX12 card.

So to answer your question, if you will only play the games you listed for the next 2-5 years, then buy a i3. If you think you might play some new games in the next 2-5 years that would benefit from a CPU with more than two cores, get the i5.

Having a quad-core CPU makes a difference in everyday tasks as well.

Like I said, if the budget allows it would make sense to get a quad-core CPU at this point. If you want to save the money or if you only want to buy a i3, buy a i3.

I can only tell you the pro and cons, I'm not a salesman on commission who will make more money if you buy a i5. ;) Buy whatever you think you need for your use.

Yeah no oc, not spending the cash for a mobo arable of it and the accompanying cpu cooler.

I probably would play at least one game that would use 4 cores, and seeing as my current rig is 5 years old, 100 bucks isn't really a big deal.

Right now the difference between the i3-6100 and i5-6500 is $87 on PCPartPicker. However, if you live near a Microcenter/Frys or if you watch out for a bundle sale from Newegg, you probably could shrink that difference down some.

Okay guys, I took your advice and have waited. Need a new pc soon as my GTX 460 100% crapped the bed and I am now running off of iGPU and getting a few random hiccups here and there (mobo slowly dying off too).

Plan on a mix of the low and mid end rig from the sticky. Reason being is that as you can see, I tend to not update or buy new parts unless they completely die. My last build was in 2010 or 11. Only update I did since then was a new SSD.

Here's what I'm thinking:

CPU: Intel Core i5-6500 3.2GHz Quad-Core Processor ($199.99 @ NCIX)
Motherboard: *ASRock H110M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($51.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: *Crucial 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR4-2133 Memory ($32.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: REUSE SSD + new External Seagate Back up Plus ( $119.99 @ Amazon)
Video Card: RX 480 Video Card ($199.99 @ Newegg when available)
Case: REUSE HAF 912
Power Supply: REUSE (although it's original from 2010/11)
Operating System: REUSE (still have 2 more keys left)
Total: ~ $605

I could potentially skip the external for now, but my current Seagate is either crapping the bed, or the USB cable is toast, because it only connects to my PC about 50% of the time.

What is your current PSU? I'm concerned about it, especially if your video card and motherboard are dying.

Honestly, off the top of my head I'm not sure. I just know it's modular, and is in the 500w range.

Do you really have 4 or 5TB of stuff to back up? I do, but I thought I was the exception. 1TB external drives are a lot cheaper.

It would be good if you could find the money for a new PSU that way, or some other way.

Edit: If you only game in the winter, you could use the i5's onboard graphics for a few months. That's what I'm doing with my i3. World of Tanks should work that way no problem. Not sure about the rest.

I literally never delete anything, ever. Games, movies, music... it adds up. Do i have 5gb right now? No. But I can see myself going over 2gb in the next 5 years (currently at 980GB on my external). I could probably make due with a 2TB for now, but price per TB makes me want to buy the 5.

I could probably get buy with i5 iGPU as long as it can play CS GO on decent settings, more so than WoT (hit my freemium limit basically). I might also play Warframe again, so iGPU would need to handle that, too.

Oh, one last questions before I buy:

Since I'm keeping my SSD which has my OS on it, do I:

1) Need to reinstall windows? Or is it just plug and play new CPU/mobo/ram.
2) If 1 is true, can I use the same product key since it's the same drive?
