Will the SLI G80 beat SLI 7800 GTX by a wide margin?

I am currently running 2 BFG 7800 GTX 256mb each in SLI. Does anybody know yet if 2 G80's will beat 2 7800 gtx's by a substantial margin? I want to go ahead and start planning their purchase now if that is the case. Thanks for any informed response.

I wouldn't start planning their purchase yet, remember, G80 is for windows Vista which will be coming out in 1-2 years. A graphic card 1-2 years away will be much faster than a graphic card now though.

So what you're saying is that 2 more advanced next generation cards in SLI are actually going to be quicker than 2 present generation cards.?!?!?!?

That's just crazy talk. ;)

First of all I doubt if nVidia even knows how fast a G80 will be yet. But to echo everythin that's already been said, - YES. Actually I think a better question would be - Will ONE G80 beat 2 7800GTX's ? And the answer is - YES. Judging by recent trends anyhow. So have fun waiting a year for your G80!! :)

Surely the G80 will work for more than the Vista os. Also, it is my understanding that the G80 will be out a lot sooner than 1-2 years. Anybody heard a time table for it's launch?

Both R600 with its unified architecture and G80 should launch in Q4 as Ronin mentioned. X1900XT and 7900 series are nothing but refresh products. If we discount ATI's inability to deliver X1800XT on time, the current high end cards are really June 2005 year technology. I recall reading that both companies are on an 15-18 months generational launch schedule. Which puts Nvidia between September - December for G80. We can guess that since ATI already did its refresh in January of this year, it surely will release its next generation card before year's end.

There is no question at all that 1 G80 will beat 2x7800GTX 256mb. X1900XTX and 7800GTX 512mb are often very close to 7800GT SLI performance. G80 will be a DX10, PS4.0, most likely a GDDR4 card; which means its memory bandwidth will be very close to 2x7800GTX cards. G80 will surely be able to use AA + HDR as well. And since no current cards will be able to display DX10 effects as in the new Crytek engine game, it'll no longer just be a matter of comparing framerates either.

Even today when we compare 7800GTX 512mb SLI vs. 7800GTX 256mb SLI we get significant differences (this is before 7900GTX even):

Quake 4 - 2048x1536 4AA/16AF
80.2 vs. 50 (leads by 60%)
HL2: Lost Coast 2048x1536 16AF, HDR
67 vs. 56 (+20%)
FEAR - 1280x960 4AA/16AF
82.7 vs. 66.8 (+24%)
BF2 - 1940x1440 4AA/16AF
86.9 vs. 68.7 (+26%)
Guild Wars - 1940x1440 4AA/16AF
145 vs. 121 (+20%)
Serious Sam 2 2048x1536 HDR 16AF
72 vs. 56 (+29%)
Far Cry HDR 1600x1200
63.6 vs. 48.2 (+32%)

Well, I sure hope so, otherwise Nv might as well fire all the engineers who designed the g80 right now.

7800GT SLI would beat 6800 Ultra SLI by a wide margin.

But a X1900XT can beat a 7800GT SLI and a X1900XTX @ 740/840 beats it by a wide margin :!

We were always taught that the only dumb question is one that is not asked. Well, I dissagree with that and not to be rude, but how in the world do we know how it will perform? I don't have a G80 in my hands and I doubt anyone does except possibly nVidia, in low clock infancy form.

So basically, you are all asking us to guess. You mine as well guess yourself as you probably wouldn't be any farther off than anyone of us at this point.

Sorry if this seems harsh, I just don't understand how you could expect anyone to know the answer to your question. We know it will be faster, but we have no idea how much faster.
