Will the Nexus 7 make a better Kindle

Wifey has birthday soon. She just dropped a hint that he'd prefer carrying an eReader than an actual book.
Right now I have a Nexus 7 on pre-order but she mentioned a Kindle.

Will the Nexus be at least as sharp and clear for text as the Kindle?

I haven't used either.

The kindle fire? If that's what she means, get her a nexus 7 instead.

But if she's talking about an e-ink model used exclusively for reading, then one of the cheaper nooks or kindles will be better.

Duely blundered from my thunderdolt

Does your wife get headaches from staring at an lcd screen for hours? Some people do some people don't but if she does I would recommend the Kindle(original) or equivalent e-ink reader.

Looking at your profile I can see how in just 2.5 years you managed to accumulate over 12k posts. Thanks for your self appointed policing of the forums..

Sorry about my overreaction to your post. I get annoyed by people who I see as nitpicking. In an effort to see just who I dissed I noticed your resume. It is indeed impressive. Please disregard the above reaction.

Nexus 7 is superior hardware wise. The Kindle Fire (I own one) does have one nice advantage over other android tablets- native support for amazon video format. Not sure if amazon will ever release an app to allow this on other devices.

For pure reading, I've heard that the e-ink Kindles (not the Fire) are easier for your eyes, but I own one of those as well as the Fire and it's just not worth carrying around multiple devices, so I only ever use the Fire.

If she's a serious reader and wants a bona-fide book replacement, the Kindle e-ink is the better choice. It's cheap and durable, has ridiculous battery life, and has no backlight (low eye strain and perfect for outdoor reading). The Nexus and Kindle are small tablets; the Kindle is an eReader. You gotta figure out which of these she really wants.

what resume might that be?
don't bow out because he has 'elite' in his title.
heck, i don't even take shit from mods. 😉

as for the topic itself, if debating between fire and n7, n7 all the way.

In general, I would say that the Nexus 7 will be about as good as Kindle in terms of text sharpness as the display is something over 200 ppi. Technically the Kindle is much better, but I don't think it will be noticeably better in most circumstances. It will definitely be better than the Kindle Fire if that's what you meant.

However, the real crux of the matter is whether she'd prefer an e-ink display. The e-ink display will be much easier to read outdoors. Also, if your wife easily gets eye strain from looking at computer monitors for long periods of time, you'd probably want to avoid the Nexus. Also, if she's only going to use it for reading books, a regular Kindle is going to be a lot cheaper and better suited for that purpose.

I'd say get the Nexus 7, unless she has a hatred for LCD screens. If she really doesn't like LCD screens and only wants to read, then going with the original kindle is best.

You can download the amazon software on the nexus 7, so if you want to read amazon books, you can. Get the nexus 7

well make sure she WANTS an e-reader and NOT a tablet first.... a lot of people will realize that for casual reading the iPad/LCD tablet is just fine. Even some serious readers are ok with it. Why? Because sometimes these users also WANT tablet functionality.

If she really doesn't care for tablet functionality then the e-reader will work, but sometimes the benefit of the tablet functions far outweigh reading to some people.

Handy chart:

Does she want to watch amazon videos on the device? YES: Buy Kindle Fire
NO: continue below

Does she *only* want to read books? YES: Buy Kindle Touch
NO: continue below

Does she want to read books, but also run other android apps? YES: Buy a Nexus 7

Get a Nook instead of a Kindle if you're looking at e-ink readers. Unless she already has a Kindle library, which it sounds like she doesn't if she wants one.

The Nook can still read Kindle books, as well as Nook books, and books in the universal EPUB format. They're also slightly more compact and don't have ads.

For tablets, the Nexus 7 is superior to the Kindle Fire in every possible way except there are a few Amazon features that only work on the Kindle Fire (mainly Amazon Prime video). And even then, they only work if you leave the Fire completely unrooted and unmodified. After getting CM9 on my Fire, I'd never want to go back to the stock interface.
