Will the later steppings of the P4 be compatible with the i850?

I know that the Pentium 4 will move to a .13 copper interconnect manufacturing process, but I've also heard that the P4 will also change from a socket-423 to a socket-478 interface. Will Intel also be manufacturing the newer .13 micron Pentium 4 in a socket-423 format?

I don't see why not; OEMs would certainly appreciate Intel doing that. However, just as it was with Slot-A Tbirds, I expect .13m S423 Willys to be a transitional product only, which might not even go retail.

You've asked two questions, though you may not realize it:

<< Will the later steppings of the P4 be compatible with the i850? >>

Yes they will.

<< Will Intel also be manufacturing the newer .13 micron Pentium 4 in a socket-423 format? >>

Don't believe so.

The i850 chipset will be the same chipset for both Socket423 and 478, much like i440BX boards are available in both Slot1 and Socket370, the i850 will be available on motherboards in two flavours, the core logic set itself will be the same though I think.

But I don't think the .13um P4s will be available in Socket423.

(I heard they might be calling the Socket 478 version i850E or something like that, but I think they dropped that to stop confusion, I'm 95% sure the core logic set is the same)

To think it through again, S478 Willies will have integrated DRDRAM memory controller. That means Intel would have to manufacture two completely different core revisions at .13m; and that might not happen.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up! I thought the i850 would only be a socket-423 version. I guess I was wrong.

I dont know their names.... but the newer P4 core coming in what a year or so? They will not beable to run in todays P4 boards. Ive read this on multiple reviews.... but Tom had more info on this somewhere.
