Will the Intel 750 PCIe NVMe 3.0 x4 SSD run well without issues on a Z97 board?

I am in the final stages of a new build after five years with my current machine. Although I already have this Crucial drive ready to put in, I was thinking about selling it and getting this Intel NVMe drive instead for a little more future-proofing.

The only components I have not yet purchased are a motherboard, a processor, and a case. I am going with a 4790K for the CPU and MicroATX form factor for the MB, having narrowed it down to a handful of Z97 offerings (the motherboards I am looking at are here).

So, my question is, will I be getting the most out of the Intel drive using a Z97 motherboard? I will only be using one graphics card in the PCIe 3.0 x16 slot, so all I need for the Intel drive will be a 3.0 x4 slot, so I should be good, right?

Any help on this is surely appreciated. Also, if you have any suggestions on the motherboards I am looking at, I would appreciate that as well. Thanks!

It will run well, also without issues.

But you are not going to get full speed. LGA1150 is x16 PCIe 3.0 from the CPU and a DMI 2.0(x4 PCIe 2.0) interface to the chipset. That again expands into SATA, USB 8x PCIe x1 etc.

Any reason you want to buy a Z97 board now, when Z170 and Skylake comes on august 5th? LGA1151 got the DMI upgraded to 3.0. (x4 PCIe 3.0).

I agree with above poster. Z97 was a great choice but there are better options now and in the near future.

If you need something now, consider the Intel LGA 2011-v3. For the SSD, consider using an M.2. This is probably the better way to go.

Something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA2W032J1130&cm_re=m.2_ssd-_-20-147-425-_-Product

I don't think Z97 supports USB 3.1 either. Future proofing your purchase as much as you can will extend the life of your new build.

Yeah I think like above 2 posters suggest but at this point for a new build Intel will be announcing Skylake on August 5th with mass availability expected by September.

You didn't mention your memory - have you already bought some DDR3 memory for a Z97 board? If you did - it's still ok, there will be some Z170 boards that support DDR3 memory.

Otherwise you will want to get DDR4 memory for a new Z170 build - for future proofing like you said.
