Will the hike in California CC tuition affect me if I already paid it?

I think it's going from $11 to $24 a unit soon..but if you already paid for it can they demand you pay more for the summer session?

Enrollment fees are currently $11 per unit. However, due to the state budget crisis, fees may be increased effective for the Fall 2003 semester. You will be notified of any changes as soon as they have been determined by the state legislature.

$11 a credit? Good God that's cheap.

Portland Community College was $44 or $45 last time I took a class, & I heard it's gone up again since then.

Yeah, although a 100% hike sounds insane, people give Gray Davis no credit for holding higher education fees completely flat for the past 4 years. Like you said, it's still pretty affordable now, and at least we're starting to correct for some of the hangovers of the .com era.

And AFAIK, fee increases cannot be retroactively assessed.

Found in a local CC's website FAQ:

"How much will fees be increased?
We don't know. Various proposals are being discussed ranging from a low of $15 per unit to a high of $26 per unit.
Currently, enrollment fees are $11 per unit.

I've already paid my fees for Fall 2003. What happens if the Legislature increases the fees?
We will have to bill you for the increase."

Ahh, as long as it's for the fall I'm fine. No more CC after the summer's over 🙂

weird, the provost raises tuition every other quarter at ucsd. it has gone up at 3x the rate of inflation the past several years. i guess now it'll go up at 900%?

and yet they have over a billion $ in the bank, i'd be ok with it if they were handing out free scholarships to needy ppl who can't afford it otherwise. but they don't.

faculty parking lot is full of mercedes and BMW's hmmm.....

I don't go to UCSD and I've been out of UC for a while, so I'll take your word for it. I was under the strong impression UC fee increases were no higher than inflation.

I'll have to admit I'm completely shocked if tuition has increased by double digit percentages the past several years (roughly 10% annually) at UCSD. Do you have a source that shows tuition has increased by approx. one third since 1999? If not, then you're just playing the old "Blame Gray Davis" game for all the ills in CA. See below.

And UC and CSU have already announced fees will go up about 30% next year. That's steep and it'll hurt students, but compare the sticker price to private colleges, and it's still more than reasonable, in cost, value and quality. I'd expect at least a dozen other states will impose a similar increase. In a strange way, it's actually a shift of costs amongst students due to the financial aid picture.

I quickly did research with Google, and UCR's fees schedules for Spring 1998-2002 do not corroborate your claim*:

1998: $1,372.25
1999: $1,308.25
2000: $1,249.25
2001: $1,284.25
2002: $1,456.75

These figures are for in-state residents. Notice the decrease from 1998-2001. The hike in 2002 is a result of the budget meltdown. AFAIK, most UCs charge essentially the same fees (give or take).

I go to San Jose State, and they had a fee increase that was billed to students *after* fees were paid for the semester.

but isn't it consider to be after the fact. As you already paid them for service and they can't force you to pay additional money for service

Whoa. First time I've heard of another SJSU'r on this board.

my tuition of winter quarter this year was $1200, then all of a sudden spring quarter was like $1450+

on top of that they are making the students pay for the price center expansion which will add another $200 a year.
