To avert this crisis we would have to protect the public from spending. This will not happen, just look at California and you will understand the precedence has been set.

The path we are on has been chosen by the majority of the people, as enforced by their elected officials. If such an official were to oppose increases in spending, they would be swiftly voted out of office and replaced by someone more open to wasting our money. While the consequences have not yet fully come to pass, it is impossible to change our course now. The public will not allow the handouts to stop.

I agree with your prediction. The US population as a whole and the politicians in particular dislike being responsible. Nothing will change until a crisis occurs. People just can't plan ahead effectively.
