It's the black furniture and bayonet lugs... turning normal hunting rifles into rifles capable of dealing out death in mass quantities.

Oh, I know WHY they do it, but fact remains that by definition there is no such thing as an "assault" rifle. The media just wants an emotion churning term, and thats it. Hell, a AK-47 with 30 round detachable mag, synthetic folding stock and bayonet isnt any more dangerous (If anything less so) then a good Mauser rifle. Hell, at range I'd prefer gettin shot at with an AK over a bolt action worked over Mauser!!

Im not too worried.

And I wont even begin comparing the number of female gun-carriers with their male counterparts.

Yes, but I'm talking averages, since the law isnt selectively applied to people above or below a certain fitness level. You havent addressed old people and how they are supposed to defend themselves, nor the selective definition of "the people" in the Bill of Rights.

As the saying goes: God made men. Samuel Colt made them equal :p

To be honest, I dont care about the "averages". Me and mine...the whole point of natural selection; and the whole point of my original thread. And no, Im really not quite that callous. It was really said more to make a point.

To question 2, I really dont give a sh!t about a possible discontinuity in the definition of "people" in the amendments. That was never part of my argument. Where I said it was debatable, I in fact attached no mention of the scope of the possible debate.

You are saying guns should be restricted to women and elderly that can't defend themselves?

hmm good posting!

anyway.

the only one i have trouble with is duffmanohyeah. WTF! you seem like only those who are perfect should survive. fvck that.

My wife is 5ft tall maybe 100lbs. While she is a black belt in karate if a 200lb guy with any training at all wanted to rape her odds are he would secede. While my wife would fight i am not 100% sure she would be able to get away. not at least alive.

I have been trying to talk her into getting a handgun and learning to shoot. I enjoy shooting (both for sport and hunting) and would like her to learn. If nothing else for the safety of my daughter.

PSA: forget spelling. i have been drinking tonight! 7 sam adams summer brews so far! and counting/

I agree 100% waggy!! One of my wifes friends was literally jacked a few days ago. Some *ahem* black individual *cough cough* walked up to him, put a gun in his face and said get in the car (His car). They went for a drive, he took them down to the heart of the ghetto where he said empty your pockets and get out. Dude then drove off with his car. My wife regularly works where dude got jacked.
If it had been my wife it very well would have ended up much worse. I think she's coming around to the idea of carrying a pistol, even if slowly.

Look at what I have said below.

According to you, "guns are an equalizer" meaning that all who need guns are unequal. Exactly why I dont like them. Those that are unequal should stay that way.

And by the way, Im not talking about societal or other power, Im speaking of the individual. And perhaps "earned" was not the proper choice on my part. Yes, that is a major component, but not the locus in exclusivity. Genetics play an enormous role. Like I said of my family, I'm pretty confident with mine. I will freely admit that this is in large part why I feel fine about taking the argument I have. You dont really see too many pasty 90lb weaklings extolling the virtues of natural selection.

It is clear what YOU think was intended, what "firearmsandliberty.com" thinks was intended, and what a retired professor of journalism from USC thought was intended, but what the framers intended is D-E-B-A-T-E-A-B-L-E. Im not coming down on either side, just saying it isn't as clear as people on either side may think it is.

On the topic of women carrying...

I'm still working on the g/f. She's willing to learn to shoot, right now she's somewhat afraid of guns - Primarily because she doesn't know anything about them. Hopefully once she's used to them she'll be more open to carrying. She says she doesn't want the responsibility. While it is certainly a responsibility, it's more importantly the ability for her to defend herself.

Since we can't go back & ask them, the only way we can determine what they meant is to read what they wrote. What they wrote is very clear, & I think it's relatively safe to say that the framers of our constitution knew they were writing the future of the country & wrote such that their intentions could be unequivocally determined by generations upon generations of Americans.

People are entitled to have cars that go faster than the speed limit, because there are places where it is legal to do so.
By the same ticket, people are entitled to assault weapons because there are places where it is legal to use them.

And the point genious is criminals WILL have guns, regardless of laws. Now, seeing as the bad guys WILL have guns, it seems only fair that us good guys and have them to protect us from the bad guys.
Of course, the ban on guns, and taking guns from the good guys sure has solved the murder problem in Washington DC hasnt it.....

I realize you never explicitly made it a part of your argument. But there is very little else in "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed" that you can use to argue the gun control side of "whether the second amendment says every American is entitled to own a firearm". If indeed you have an arugment that says that the 2nd Amendment does not, in fact, give the individual right to bear arms, and that is NOT based on the argument that the 2nd Amendment doesnt apply to individual Americans but rather the states, I'd like to hear it. At the moment I cannot remember any gun control advocates' arguments regarding the 2nd Amendment that didnt hinge on that point.

Now I rememeber! This has nothing to do with this thread, but that was my point when I made the "I salute you, O' Grand Imperial Wizard..." quote currently in someone's sig. I think I had addressed that to classy... maybe.

I just think its SO freaking retarded to say gun bans are good. Historically gun bans RAISE crime rates. Look an Australia if you want an example. Why? Becuase common citizens dont go around blowing people away. And criminals, by their very nature, arent registered gun toting citizens. Well, if the bad guys have'm illegally its only sensible the common man can own one to defend himself.

Having a gun doesn't protect you from criminals. What percentage of gun-toting fools actually successfully halt crimes when they are packing? Wait, that's the police's job, not yours. The police have guns. They, not everyday citizens, are the opposition to the criminals. You are more likely to get hurt if you have a gun during a crime (because that guy with the gun will actually just shoot you instead of taking your money). What exactly the "good" action you might possibly take with that AR-15 is, I have no idea. Perhaps spray the neighborhood with bullets after a would-be intruder wiggled your doorknob?

Your constitutional logic is failed at best. "Very clear" is quite the opposite, it's murky as hell. Go check out FindLaw and read their section regarding the Second Amendment. Not as easy and pro-gun as you would all like it to be, especially with U.S. v. Miller.

Countries with stricter gun laws... less murder. Quite simple. The cat's already out of the bag, sure; there are lots of guns out there. But eventually, as those used for bad purposes were seized and destroyed (assault weapons), the supply would decrease. No need to keep replacing them to keep up the quota of gun violence.

Just admit you like owning a gun because you like firing it and it makes you feel powerful. I'll accept that, and with the NRA screaming its head off all the time as if gun ownership was the central element of American life (if they really cared about personal liberties they'd be off protesting the Patriot Act and the DMCA), I realize that the chances of meaningful gun control are low. But don't act as if you are really interested in it being a constitutional issue, that's just a good justification.

Yeah, why heck the police do such a good job I cant even remember the last time a crime was committed....

Lord knows they sure were there when my wifes friend was robbed. Know what they said to him when they got there? "Your pretty white to be in this part of town" I kid you not. Yep, the polive have MY full faith in protecting me..........
And I'm not talking about semi automatic large capacity rifles. I'm talking guns in general. A concealed carry pistol is your best line of defense against crime. Period. The second is knowing when to use it.

I own both "assault" rifles and hunting rifles. Know what I take out shootin? My level action 30-30. I leave the SKS with 30 rnd detachable in the closet. Its just not that fun to me. Personally, I like good rifles. And semi automatic rifles dont strike me as a fine grade of rifle.

I don't really think people need the weapons he dislikes even with respect to the "right to defend". Farmers and hunters use rifles and shotguns and for home defense a shotgun or pistol is enough.

It is pretty crazy reading the amount of people in this thread who want to arm their wives, girlfriends and kids. If you live in that much fear why not just move. I can't imagine "requiring" a gun to live. I think it would drive me to mental breakdown or some crap with all that anxiety.

(No this isn't a Michael Moore moment from Bowling for Columbine... I rather thought that movie was crap and hate Michael Moore :p )
