Will someone develop a Wii-type controller for the PS3 or Xbox360?

If someone develops a similar Wii-type controller for the PS3 and Xbox360, wouldn't that be the idea situation? Then we would have a Wii with next generation graphics.

First of all, the answer is probably no. Secondly, it's not just about making the controller. You have to develop the games around that technology.

High Velocity Bowling makes great use of the motion sensing ability of the PS3 SixAxis controller. I'd love to see them take a shot at a golf game.

It's an "arcade" download though and the graphics are barely "last gen". But the functionality is there.

Why?

Do you see an expanded user base and added gameplay styles be a bad thing for a console?

i think the technology is just not there yet, even on the wii. there will always be a slight lag with where you are aiming and where the actual cursor is on screen, and you are always aiming at an offset (unless the game has calibration which not many have but apparently some of the new light gun shooters do).

what i mean by offset is that if you have the sensor bar on top of your TV and point directly at the center of your TV, the cursor won't be directly in the center of the TV. And if you put the sensor bar below your TV, then aim directly at the TV, your cursor won't be directly in the center of the TV and it won't be at the same spot it was when you had the sensor bar ontop of the TV.

also with the quality control of Sony and MS, they won't allow for all these shovelware games you are seeing come out on the wii.

and i don't see an expanded gameplay with the control added. i think it would be more of a tacked on feeling, just like I think all of the six-axis specific controls are in the PS3 games i've played (other than FLoW).

i think devs desining games around the wiimote is a big reason that 90% of the games out for wii are garbage. i don't want to see that start happening to the PS3 and 360.

i personally dont think that any games that control primaryily by pointing w/the wiimote control well on the Wii due to it's slight lag by nature and the whole offset type of aiming. I've played a few FPS on the Wii and I think they all control like crap. Wario Ware had it's own issues too.

The only games I really have enjoyed on the Wii, other than wii bowling, were ones that didn't really rely on the whole pointing/aiming/sensor stuff for gaming (Mario Galaxy and Super Paper Mario) other than Wii Sports for a little bit.

Guncon 3 for PS3 uses LED to detect where it is pointing on the screen. You have to place 2 big ugly emitters on your TV.
It can also know if you swing the gun from side to side, althought I'm not sure if it uses the 6axis to do that.

BTW I tried using these LEDs for the Wii (to cut down on the number of things placed on top of my TV) but it doesn't work. It seems they use more LEDs than the Wii (Namco says it is more accurate) and it confuses the wiimote.

Someone already did for the PS2 I think.

What Nintendo recognized is that for generations there have been all sorts of really cool peripherals that were only ever used for one or two games, because no one wants to limit their potential audience by forcing you to use a peripheral that not everyone has. So Nintendo made the cool peripheral the default controller, and that's why everyone develops for it. That wouldn't happen on the PS3 and Xbox 360.

I think you underestimate the power of the dollar and the advancement of technology. 😉

We won't see this for the 360 or the PS3 due to their original design and business plan/life cycle, but it wouldn't shock me to see the next gen consoles with this technology if the Wii continues to be this successful.

yah and thats what this thread is about 😛

i am pretty confident the PS4 and Xbox720 will have some type of motion sensing built in for sure.

Guncon 3 has two Light Emitting Diodes to attach to your TV? I can't picture this at all. Can you take/fine a picture?

That would be aweseome !! Instead of a controller, they could just built it into a device you wear... Like a glove maybe

You really need something that ships with and is integrated into the core system--much like the Wii. It just wouldnt sell well. I'm sure there would be those packs of people who are curious though and would try it.

I agree with purbeast. I also hope we don't see anything beyond what Sony has done with the sixaxis on next-gen consoles. The Wii controls are innaccurate, and the button configuration is horrible.

Besides, if Sony or Microsoft decides to emulate what Nintendo has done this generation, the expanded user base just doesn't come along with it. The price and novelty are the two biggest factors of the Wii's success. I doubt Sony and Microsoft will design systems that will be introduced at low-enough price, and the novelty will have worn off way before.

I'm not yet convinced its a novelty. I'm as comfortable with a controller as anyone, but to outsiders, with all those sticks and buttons, it looks the controls for a helicopter. Sure, the Wiimote can use more buttons, but there is quite a bit to be said for a more natural control scheme.

Ask yourself this: would the DS be better off without the second screen, or the touchscreen? I'd wager that most would give up the second screen, because natural control is more than just a gimmick. As long as its used well.

Next gen, theyll have learned well enough how to use motion/pointer controls that the addition of two more buttons or so isn't going to backfire. It really falls apart when they try to reverse engineer a game designed for the gamepad on the wiimote, but for wii first games, it usually works quite well. Usually.

And the wiimote doesnt have inherent lag. Some games have a smoothing algorithm in there to keep the pointer still that induces lag, and most HDTVs will add a little bit of its own. Its no worse than your average wireless mouse most of the time. And I was a bit upset about the whole "pointer doesnt actually point where you point" thing at first, but now I think of it more as a mouse than a laser pointer. Its extremely tiring to hold the wiimote in such a way that you'd even really notice it all too much, unless its WAY off that you can always notice it. In that case, find a better place for your IR bar.

For years games that required special controllers were basically doomed to failure. That all changed with Guitar Hero/Rock Band. Those games have shown that a bundled controller with a great game at a decent price will sell well. The key is the software though. Had GH sucked it obviously wouldn't have done as well as it has.

Exactly thats the worst part about the Wii, most of the games are horrible.

yeah... bring out the Wiimote for Xbox 360/PS3, so that we could have a gazillion more mini games with graphics that look from the 80s/90s ... NOT!
