Will Smith says he's not that talented

LOS ANGELES - Will Smith says he's not a great actor ? but he's a hardworking one.

"I've never viewed myself as particularly talented. I've viewed myself as ... slightly above average in talent," the 39-year-old actor tells CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview scheduled to air Sunday.

"Where I excel is with (a) ridiculous, sickening work ethic," Smith says. "While the other guy's sleeping, I'm working. While the other guy's eating, I'm working. While the other guy's making love, I mean, I'm making love, too, but I'm working really hard at it!"

Smith's latest movie, "I Am Legend," opens Dec. 14. His screen credits also include "The Pursuit of Happyness" and "Ali."

I like him as a person, knowing that he's really had to work hard to get to where he is now, so I think that supplements what I see on screen. The guy enjoys life, is always cracking jokes...and I absolutely loved "Fresh Prince of Bel Air". Plus, he's got a Grammy too 😛

Exactly - Fresh Prince of Bel Air was/is an amazing show and I enjoy his attitude.
 
For most of the beginning of his career he pretty much always played the same character. And he has a very good talent at making jokes and being funny, but he pretty much did all of the same types of jokes every movie. Recently though he has actually been in moves that took acting talent and has been just as successful in those movies, they likely took a whole lot more work than his previos comedic roles, but still I think he is a very talented comedian who has used hard work to become a pretty good actor too.
 
He might not be the best, but he's a better actor than a lot of the other above the title names who can't act for sh!t, like Tom Cruise, Nicholas Cage (to name just a couple).
 
I absolutely agree, he's not the best actor, but it's clear he works his ass off. I like him for that fact alone.

He's definitely better than a lot of the popular actors, like Tom Cruise. He's certainly no Jack Nicholson though.

I agree with you about Cruise and Cage. Cage is weird though...cause he's absolutely GREAT in movies like Adaptation. and Leaving Las Vegas. But then he's terrible in most of his other movies.
 
he seems like a good enough actor and a nice enough guy. Pursuit of Happyness was a good movie, because of him.

The problem with Will Smith is that they keep giving him roles where he doesn't fit the character. It's like the producers are sitting around discussing potential stars and say, "Let's see. The character is an aging Jewish lesbian. Who would best fit that part? Got it! Will Smith."

The fact that he keeps his politics and religion to himself is enough for me to like him.
 
i half agree with the article's headline. he's more talented as a rapper than an actor, but he has definitely stepped up his game recently with Pursuit of Happyness (i'm sure having his real son playing the son role in the movie helped too). u guys remember him in Legend of Bagger Vance? he played an older character then, and to me, he was soooooooo not believable.

Will Smith's staying power in Hollywood is moreso his charm and looks and the fact that he keeps his nose clean (likely from being married with kids but i guess even b4 that with his funny, non-Gangsta rap).

unless he changes, my guess is he'll be making movies for a longggg time.

 
He did a serious movie way back when he was much younger -- Six Degrees of Separation. It wasn't the same wacky "Fresh Prince" character. To say that he's a more talented rapper than actor would say that he sucks balls as an actor.
