Although I agree, but so what? You make it sound like tourism dollars are bad. 2006 was the largest tourism year for the USA at about 52 million visitors, and over $110 billion in revenue. Its huge business, and a relevant source of revenue.
Nothing is wrong with tourism.

I lived in Orlando for years and the city is awesome in part because of all the tourism dollars.

My point wasn't that tourism dollars are bad, but that San Fran is an illusion. Liberals point to it and say 'look at how amazing liberalism is!' while ignoring the fact that their liberal utopia is built on tourism dollars that come from outside the city. Take away that huge source of money and San Fran becomes Oakland.

Your point is nullified looking at the broader bay area, that's liberal and does great.

Oakland???

It is great because of all the high tech industries that provide high paying jobs and tons of taxes (aka money for liberals to give away) Take away tourism and those high paying jobs and then what??

If liberal policies are so great then why is it that liberally run cities are some of the worst places in the country?? Detroit, New Orleans, Chicago, St Louis etc etc

The liberal cities that do good are the ones that have elements to them that prop up the rest of the city. New York and its banking and tourism, Chicago and tourism + banking, San Fran and tourism + banking etc etc.

But go to liberal cities that lack these elements and you find disasters such as Detroit, Baltimore, St Louis, Gary IN, Flint MI.

And if my aunt had balls, she'd be my uncle.
Take away any city's major source of income and they become a ghetto sh!thole. Take away oil and gas from Houston and see what happens.

Sometimes, even tourism (and the dollars it brings) can't cure mismanagement. Look at DC - it's definitely gotten better now that the people have cured themselves of that awful habit of re-electing Marion Barry, but the schools still have huge issues. It was bleeding population for a while as people fled for the suburbs, but I think that's stopped.

Instead of arguing the limiting cases, anecdotes, etc., it might be more relevant to compare red states versus blue states in terms of per capita income, lifespan, education levels, etc. Except I'd avoid that issue if I were you...

You could if you want, but keep in mind that just 40 years ago all the red southern states were blue states and all the northeast blue states were red.

It will take a lot longer than 40 years to reverse the hundreds of years of economic weakness of the south. The main reason the south has been so poor is because of its agricultural based economy and only in the past few decades has that started to change. Go to places like Atlanta and Charlotte and look at the 'new south' and how things are changing.

Hmmm... what happens to this exercise with the passage of the Health Care Reform Bill tonight?
