what's so good about being backwards compatible? if you have old generation games, shouldn't you already have the old console?

i dont know about you, but i love my classics(mario borthers 1,3,2(wtf was nintendo thinking with 2? wasnt even a real mario like game, though ti was fun) duckhunt, zelda 1) but my NES no longer works. i'd love to pay say, $5 each to get play those games again on my TV.

Ironically, right now, the best way to do that is with a modded xbox.

And mario 2 wasnt even a mario game in japan, they just changed the characters and made it one here.

The GC is still my favorite system. Guess you have to be an old school nintendo fanboy to appreciate it though. But they made a profit on the GC, so I dont see why anyone would think theyre going away. If anyone is struggling, its microsoft with xbox, they are bleeding money out of the ass with it, but then again, money is what microsoft has.

They made a $84 million profit on sales of $1.41 billion, compared to the same numbers in 04 of $397 million loss off $1.27 million. :p They're hardly hurting for cash. Besides, they made a lot of mistakes and didn't have the same relationships with vendors that they do now.

I had a GC - preordered it the day it was announced. I liked it, but I liked my XBox more (I traded my GC for a XBox). I don't see myself buying another Nintendo product in the near future. (Nor a Sony)

the only problem i had with gc was the controller. espically since the trigger Z was so oddly placed, no for FPSs at all. that and the weird shapes of the face buttons.

My one complaint about Nintendo is mainly with the GBA, instead of making compilations of classic games they chose to sell them induvidualy. An NES game is anywhere from 5-20 kilobytes in size and an SNES game is 150k or so you can fit several of them and an emulator on a GBA cart easily. The only reason not to make compilation carts is pure greed hence part of the reason I no longer own a GBA.

What Nintendo has that MS and Sony don't is the exclusive Nintendo games

As long as they don't crap those up, they're fine.

my complaint with nintendo is the fact that they keep rehashing so many games... GBA was SNES ports, DS looks like GC ports.
although none of the 3 companies will get my money (dont own consoles), i support nintendo the least, followed by sony (cause SOE ruined infantry online), and finally M$

i dont know about asheron's call... but for infantry, the servers suck (i get ping spiked all the damn time, i swear its just to make guests pay) and p2p drove eveyone away (before p2p, roughly 1000 people would be in EOL at any point, now its ~125 if you're lucky)

No. Turbine Entertainment owns Asheron's Call. MS used to own it, but after some major venture capitalists invested in Turbine, Turbine bought back Asheron's Call 1&2. They also had some coin left over to fund D&D Online out of their own pocket. D&D will be a major cashcow, though it wont have PvP....

SOE owns the Everquest franchise.

I think with gc they decided to cede the adult/high priced market to M$ and sony. They went for the budget/kidlet market. If I had a 8 year old I would have gotten that Gamecube deal with mario kart last christmas. It's cheap, fun, and non-violent. If they can hold the kiddy market and keep costs down then I think they can do fine. The other two might try to gobble them up, though.

I think Nintendo will be around for a while yet, calls of their demise are premature. While their hayday may be gone they still manage to produce some of the best, and most fun, game franchises out there. Mario and Zelda for example and lots more. I bought the Nintendo DS a while back and while games have been slow to come out it seems like things are starting to get in gear with games being shown off at E3, besides it's also fully backwards compatible with the GA. XBox and PS2/3 may be flashier and garner more atention and Nintendo may be a bit slugish when it comes to marketing and promotion but they have never disapointed me in the game play department and in the end that's what counts.
