Will RAID motherboard work without RAID setup

Seeing everyone with their AXIA tbirds makes me want to upgrade but my 8kta+ that has the KT133 chipset so the max I would be able to oc a 1ghz t-bird is 1.3 ghz (12.5*104). To me this isn't worthwhile if I can't push the cpu to the limit so I was thinking of doing a mb/cpu upgrade (only 3 months after I upgraded my current system). I would like use at least 5 IDE drives (40GB HD, 17 GB HD backup, DVD, CDRW, ZIP) so I was thinking of getting a mb with RAID. My question is since I do not plan to use a RAID setup, with the RAID controller just act as an additional 2 ATA-100 controllers. If so, technically, I can have 8 drives. Right?

Correct, the RAID is just there as an option for those that want to use it. You can still use the extra IDE prots normally without making any use of the RAID capability.
