Will people still be buying home p.c.'s in 2020?

When a smart phone or tablet can basically run any program 92 percent of the people care about, will there still be home p.c.'s being sold in 2020?

At some point I wonder if today's pc makers will start selling tablet kits, with a tablet, monitor, keyboard and mouse. Or perhaps just a hdmi cable and keyboard and mouse?

Dunno about anyone else, but I'll be. Until my phone replaces a large widescreen monitor, TrackIR, keyboard, etc for gaming, I'll stick to a PC.

I still like my desktop PC... Could be because I've been using them for years and I like familiarity.

2020 is sooner than you think. Desktops are here to stay for at least a decade or two, if not longer.

I wouldn't care to speculate that far into the future. I can visualize a phone being powerful enough to run most programs, and dropping it in a dock at home which gives a full keyboard and other peripherals. When that day comes, and I have FULL control of the device, I'll give up the desktop. Other people will too.

For most tasks, eventually the phone (or watch, or a similar personal device) will be the PC. You'll have your computer with you everywhere you go, your data will be there or in the cloud, and you'll be able to hook it up anywhere you go to a monitor via a standardized wireless monitor/keyboard/mouse.

Gaming, CAD, rendering, etc due to a neverending increase in capability and therefore power consumption, will probably still continue to be done on specialty boxes. But anything that's not computationally intense will be done in your pocket. (Giggity)

I don''t see any reason for desktops to go extinct. Decreased for the average user? Sure, they already are, but gone? Nah. I'll still have at least one.

I think most people will be using their phone/tablet and the cloud by then.

As mentioned, drop it into a dock or have it connect wirelessly to your big screen TV. When it has a full OS this will be possible. Which is what Windows is doing and will advance in.

A lot of people have already gone to laptops. A lot of business people have too. I think the next step is a tablet or phone. Some day when a video card can be hooked up externally I bet we'll have some gamers doing it as well.

There will always be a percentage that wants or needs a full desktop though. But eventually I think the returns will get so low on making those big machines that the cost will go to high and only professionals who make money with them will pay that kind of price.

Low end uses like web/email/flash games => phones.

Don't think anyone would want to do office work on a phone unless it has a pico projector and an air keyboard.

No, next November Comet ISON will bring the vampire ship to earth. By 2020 we will all be dead or undead. Either way, the touch screens, which will completely replace keyboards by 2020, will not respond to our cold touch and so we will have no way to use desktop PCs in 2020.

Imagine this:

You keep your phone in your pocket. You walk up and sit down at a desk and it instantly connects to the monitor/TV, keyboard, mouse. You type in your password and user name and start using it.

You can do this anywhere you go. You can bring your work home and start where you left off. You can go to your friends house and have your whole computer with you. You can use it at public locations just like you brought your home PC with you. Going on a trip? Same thing, connects to the Hotel TV. Simply by being near it. Perhaps first class airplanes can have a monitor at your chair that it connects to.

You and your friends can connect at the same time on the same TV and play games together instantly. All while never even taking it out of your pocket.

I see a lot of potential and convenience.

this but without the need for your phone to even be on or near you.

I just returned a 10.1" tablet that, while pretty to look at and semi-functional for many things, was no substitute for my desktop, any more than my phone could be. BTW, I love my phone and take it everywhere, but a computer it ain't. Mobile devices have their niche, but for serious work I need a 23" screen, mechanical keyboard, an ergo mouse/digitizer tablet, and enough RAM and processing power to process photos, video, and large, complicated spreadsheets.

Desktops are here to stay FOREVER.

I HATE doing anything outside of "basic" things on ANYTHING but the desktop. Heck I don't even like to do most things on the laptop.

Tablets/Phones are a gimmick. Most close people I see getting them....put it to the side after a week or 2 and never touch it again (or hardly).

I think these devices are really nice to have when you are on the road or if you travel a lot. Outside of that, they are a great toiled material (that's about it).

flash/app games just don't do it for me. I will be buying a PC in 2020. (If I haven't already bought one in 2019.)

you know none of those things are a PC. They are peripherals and a monitor
No doubt. I guess I should have made it a bit more clear: until a phone can be as powerful (CPU/RAM/harddrive/video card) as my PC, and accept the peripherals like I mentioned (either through a dock or some other way), I'll stick with a PC.
