Will PC133 downclock too PC100?

i have a pc133 stick running in my old computer(100mhz fsb) without any problems in the past 2 years

conspiracy theory:
compaq pc's bios check the ram's spd, if the ram's spd doesn't say compaq brand ram, it won't work.
so you must buy rip-off price compaq ram from compaq only.
🙂

However, if you buy a 256Meg stick, make sure that it has chips on both sides as your motherboard probably does not support high-density memory.

Last time I checked my ASUS Mainboard manual it said not to use DIMMS that "have chips on both sides of the module." I would check your source again, unless ASUS got it wrong. But, then again, I haven't seen them for a while anyway. I also tried an old 66 MHz 64 MB DIMM that had chips on both sides, and it also was twice as high as most DIMMS, and it worked.

I bet it won't work. The problem as stated above somewhere is not the speed of the chips 133vs100, but the density. If it doesn't have chips on both sides of the PCB it probably won't work. Be safe, buy it from Crucial.com

Not true. I used generic PC133 ram in an old compaq system and it detected it and worked fine.....

This last weekend I tried to install a Kingston 256Mb High-Density SDRAM in a Compaq Presario desktop. The motherboard had an Intel 810E chipset
And there is your problem right there. That memory will not work in an Intel 810 chipset motherboard. You can light some incense, do a little voodoo dance and all that but it still won't work.

pc 133 will underclock to pc100 pc66 etc. those morons at best buy are just that, morons. so buy some pc133 and have fun with ur celly 850.

yes PC133 can downclock to PC66.
however, aged systems use aged motherboards.
aged motherboards use aged chipsets.
aged chipsets don't support memory modules using 128Mbit or above chips.
PC133 256MByte modules use at least 128Mbit chips.

please check your system/motherboard's specification and the spec. of the memory you're going to buy in advance.
