Hi,
My bro is running this setup:
opty 165 @ 2.7ghz
2x1gb pc4000 ram
ati x1900xtx video card
2 raptors raid 0
2 dvd-rw drives
audigy 2 zs
ocz 520w sli psu
winxp sp2

He wants to upgrade and get the 8800gtx.
1. will opty 165 running 2.7ghz hold back 8800gtx?
2. is his psu adequate to run 8800gtx?

Thanks for any input or help.

PSU borderline, but passable.

The Opty will definitely be somewhat of a bottleneck, particularly in stuff like SupCom. But "hold it back", not so much really. It will be a pretty giant upgrade from his already very decent XTX.

If/when he goes C2Q/Barcelona (the only legitimate upgrades from that nice Opty, unless you overclock the bejebus out of a C2D), the 8800GTX will stretch its legs a bit more ;)

Not to the point requiring an upgrade.

In WOW (3??), probably.
Doom3, maybe.

Doesn't hurt to try the card with the PSU. If the computer seems unstable then you'll probably need to upgrade.

In WOW, even at 16xAA, 16xAF, you might be CPU limited (never played the game, but I think it isn't that graphic intense.

But like I said before, nothing that would require an upgrade. An Opty@2.7ghz is just fine. Look at mine, I have an Opty@2.5ghz with an 8800GTS, works fine for me.

I'd say tell your bro to hold off for 6-8 months. His current card should be fine for 1280x1024 and if he waits for 6 months chances are he'll be able to get something as fast or faster than the gtx for $300-$350.

Depends on the game, resolution and settings, like others said. In MMOs and RTS, perhaps.

But try something like Oblivion outdoors at 1680x1050 or higher, with 4AA, 16xAF, highest in game settings with highest IQ and your CPU will be the least of your worries.

The GTX should eat through these so fast that, yes, the Opteron may prevent you from getting 11ty hundred fps - so make do with a CPU-limited 10ty hundred :D

for those 2 games does he even need to upgrade ?
a 1900xtx and stock opty 165 should be enough to get 60fps on those and thats the limit of most LCDs anyway

yeah if he want stalker or oblivion then an upgrade is needed.

maybe spend the money saved from not upgrading the computer into a bigger monitor.

a 2.7 dual core opteron will not bottlneck you at all. You might not get 5000000 fps but you will get very playable fps. Ive got a x2 4600+ @ 2.7 and i get 175 fps @1920x1200 16xcsaa and 16xaf in css and my mate with a gtx and a 6700 only gets like 180-185 so its not much of a difference. And i ran my system with a antec 480w psu for ages until i got this ocz one. But for gaming at a low res like 1280x1024 a gtx is a major waste of money the x1900xt will do fine.

No. Your brother might want to run 16AA/16AF to truly appreciate the GTX at that resolution, however. ;)

What's the point of the upgrade if all he's playing is Wow and Doom 3? Esp. at those resolutions. The 1900xtx should be able to max out those games already anyhow w/ good FPS to boot.

At 1280 x 1024 there is no point in the GTX. The current card will do just fine, and if you must upgrade, an 8800GTS will be more than sufficient. In fact the 8800GTS won't even go to its full potential due to CPU limitations.

look like he should hang on to the card until upgrading the cpu, what's a good program to overclock and test stablebility for video card?

I say it depends on the game, but what it does mean is you can run all your current games at 16AF/8xAA with HDR, must be nice at 1280x1024 in terms of you can really buy the best product today and still be great in 2 years... My poor 1920x1200 is screaming for GPU power lol.
