Will Nvidia PWN ATi once Doom III is released?

My 8500 handles OpenGL fine as it is right now, why leave me with no options to vote on there? And didn't early indications already hint that ATI hardware could handle Doom III just fine if not as good or even better than nVidia hardware?

If you ask me this is just sad and silly attempt to attack a company and the users that buy their products in defense of another. Good to see we're maturing in this forum.

The GeForce FX is currently the fastest card we've benchmarked the Doom technology on and that's largely due to NVIDIA's close cooperation with us during the development of the algorithms that were used in Doom. They knew that the shadow rendering techniques we're using were going to be very important in a wide variety of games and they made some particular optimizations in their hardware strategy to take advantage of this and that served them well. --JC

But we haven't seen what the Det50's will do for HL2, and we haven't seen what ATI's driver updates will do for D3. It's still a toss-up, but I think, in the end, ATi's current DX9 cards will outperform nV's current DX9 cards by a greater margin in HL2 than nV's cards do to ATi's in D3.

I remember when the GF4MX came out.

Someone did a review and said man this card rocks every game on the planet but don't buy it because it will suck at DOOM3.

That was like a year and a half ago................

DOOM3 just might be the best looking game ever when it comes out, but lets be honest here.

The actual game is going to blow chunks.

Everyone knows it.

Only multiplayer will save it.

By the I will have an AMD64 and a ATI 25000pro or something so performance won't be a problem.

Interesting analysis. When was the last time Carmack released something that "blew chunks"? Oh right, there was that Wolfenstein MP game that he gave away for FREE.

I wonder if the main character in the game will have attitude for once. It's such a shame that Duke Nukem is taking Forever. Maybe JC could just bribe them.

Personally I kind of agree about the actual game comment. Id design amazing technical games, but the story and actual gameplay is very boring and redundant. All their single player games were like this. Yes I agree Doom was revolutionary and I still remember the first time playing it after waiting for painful hours downloading it on a 2400bps modem, however the 'story' or 'feel' of their games has not evolved much, shoot enemies, get key, pass level. The immersion in Doom 3 is really nice but I don't think it will have as big of an impact as HL2. I'm really shocked at the default 4 player multiplayer for Doom 3 and they don't seem to be involving the mod community to a large degree off the bat like Valve is doing. I think Raven or whoever is doing Quake 4 are making a massive mistake by going single player. Quake 3 is an awesome multiplayer game which I still play constantly (along with mods like RA3). If they would just release Q4 using Doom3 technology but keep similar style of gameplay I think it would be huge.

I personally don`t think it`s going to make a big difference with HL2,we also don`t know how much ATi can improve with their drivers for HL2,only time will tell for the final outcome between both Nvidia and ATi.

Yep by the time DOOM3 is out,we`ll have new video cards from both Nvidia and ATi so that is a whole new ball game.

I reckon that while Doom III will be the most visually advanced game on the market once it's released, the gameplay isn't going to cause any jubilation. The environments are apparently not fully interactive and Multiplayer only supports 4 players unless i'm mistaken. On the other hand, HL2 apparently has fully interactive environments, graphics that are still fantastic by anyones standards, and AI to die for. Not to mention an epic storyline and atmospheric gameplay on a scale not yet seen. I used to love the old Doom/Quake games and only first played Half-Life a year ago, but enjoy the cinematic feeling and involvement of Half-Life far better than i did any of those games. Doom III will simply be a far more visually polished Daikatana, long in development, great in the looks department, low on substance... IMHO :beer:

He was initailly pretty angry about it, according to the posts he made to slashdot at the time. I wouldnt be suprised if some of the extra time spent optimising nvidia cards is a result of this...
