Will Nvidia And AMD Be Coming Out With Better Performing HD Card In 2014?

I'm planning to upgrade my GTX 680 4gb in Christmas 2014. I will also be buying.

The newest Nvidia card now is not performing so well on 4k settings. I am hoping there is a single card that will be released next year that would have 100-120fps on max settings with 4x AA for Crysis 3. It is best to see how Crysis performs since it requires a really high end PC for good performance on high settings.

No idea about Crysis 3, but the guesstimates on the next gen on 20nm is late 2014. I doubt anyone will be able to give you something more specific than that.

I don't think you will even be able to get a 120hz 4k monitor by then.

I'm sure we will see 30% increase late next year or early 2015. It won't be cheap and it won't beat a cf 290x or sli Titan rig.

I was planning to use a television instead. Considering that one of them is already on sale for 4500$, would be a lot cheaper during the sales of Christmas 2014.

They will when TSMC opens their 20nm process up to AMD/nvidia. Its coming online before the end of this year, last I heard, but all the early capacity is contracted out to ARM parts. Q2/Q3 2014 is what was being tossed around for GPUs. I'm not sure if GloFlo will have anything ~20nm ready to go before then.

50 to >60 fps is certainly playable. If you want extra juice, just slap a water cooling loop on these cards and a) stop their throttling and b) OC further.

Those are some of the most demanding games currently and its more than playable. On 20nm, I expect a single top GPU with a good OC to be playble at 4K with some AA enabled.

my 2 780's run Crysis at around 60ish on very high with 2x AA @ 1440p. I doubt Nvidia's next card will be twice as fast as a single 780. We'll be on 14nm before we see something that can do what you're asking, and maybe not even then.

Most likely. Being able to release cards during holiday season is a huge boon for both companies, so it is imperative for nVidia and AMD to get new cards out by Oct/Nov 2014 if it's possible to do so.

The only thing that can hold them back is whether or not the 20nm node will be delayed; if it's delayed, there isn't much they can do besides work on adding value via new features, driver optimizations, etc. In this respect, AMD has a slight advantage due to Mantle.

I wouldn't expect 4K to be worthy barring Dual 20nm high end GPUs and for single that'll be something like Nvidia's Volta would be very suitable due to it's stacked memory. I think 20nm GPUs will be Summer 2014 or maybe late 2014 if something goes wrong, I doubt spring and 2015 is way too pessimistic.

Maybe not 18 months; I would wager that we would start seeing 20nm cards in September '14.

One thing that bugs me is people saying that 20nm will be 50% faster. Maybe once maxed out it will be, but it took Nvidia over 6 months to release a maxed Keplar. When 20nm debuts, they will have a limited selection for discrete GPUs, and all their good chips will go to professional cards.

I just bought a new card because I am skeptic about the 20nm launch.

Will be impressive if 28nm->20nm can even match the performance gains of 40nm->28nm. There is a reason TSMC is promising a short gap between 20nm and 16nm FinFET.
