Will NAV2001 affect RC5?

Just installed NAV2001 after using InnoculateIT, which IMO turned out to be crap. Anyways, If I leave the auto-protect disabled, would it hurt my RC5 speed compared to not having it running at all?

In attempting to answer this question for myself, I have done some testing on my systems and it appears that NAV uses approximately 1-2% of the CPU time when it is active, and McAfee uses about 1% of the CPU time, and they are generally only active when the client (RC5 or SETI) is actually writing results to the disk, so the difference for me was almost negligible.

Even so, if I know for certain that the computer will not be used for an extended time, and it will therefore also not be connected to the Internet or accessing any other potential source of virii, I usually will close the Auto-Protect function, since even another 1% can add up over time... 🙂

Yea, when I'm away for a long time, like vacation, i usually just unplug my cable modem. But when I'm at school or something, I sually have ZoneAlarm and NAV2001, with auto-protect disabled, running. I guess 1-2% isn't too much since I do play games on my PC heavily, which also reduces the number of blocks I produce.

If NAV2001 is anything like V5.0, it won't take nearly as much time as ZoneAlarm, even when running with autoprotect on. And it doesn't run at all with autoprotect off, so it shouldn't hurt your speed a bit.

My virus scanner of choice, though, is FProt. It may run in a DOS window, but it's free, its updates are free, and from what I can see, it's as good as or better than Norton for standard virus scanning.

I have NAV on with AutoProtect all the time, along with ZoneAlarm. I lost a mobo to a virus a little over a year ago. I'd rather lose 2% cpu cycles.

i am running nav2001 and according to wintop it has used 3mins out of 7hr 10mins i have no idea what the % is but some one allways comes along and works it out they can't resist🙂
