Will my power supply be enough for my new card?

Hey I am looking to get a r7 370 or r9 390( the 4 gig versions) sapphire radeon but I only have 460 power supply do I have to upgrade my Psu to run them? I think 460 should be enough to run the 370 but would it be enough to run the 390? If it isn't would it be worth it to upgrade the Psu just to get the 390.

No, R9 390 typically isn't safe to run on a 460W power supply. But what is the exact power supply model?

The rest of your specs would also be nice to know, unless you're 100% sure you know what you're doing and don't need any other advice

Yeah sure. Let me look up device manager and pop open my case :3 I have a dell xps. Intel core i7 3770 3.40.
12gb ram. Dell psu model ac460ad-01. If I need a new psu or the cards I mentioned aren't good would appreciate some reccomendations, I can spend around 350.

I want to be able to play all the new games with no lag and I'm happy playing even on medium settings.

Reason I'm getting a new card is I am about 99% sure mine died. Black screen turns on fine. Plugit into my tv and displays really ugly messed up colors and only in 640xsomething. Am gonna try and see if I can borrow someone's card to make sure but regardless le info would be useful. I had a hd xfx radeon 7770.

If I decide not to up my psu would be a good card that could be supported by my 460 psu.

Your 460W PSU should be fine for a GTX 960 (preferably 4GB) since it doesn't use a lot of power (about 50W more than HD 7770). It will handle any game smoothly on medium settings, and it's more than twice as fast as HD 7770. Check if your PSU has that.

And you were unable to change the display resolution?

That might be a software issue, you could try just reinstalling AMD drivers. Preferably wipe the old drivers with Guru3D DDU first.

It could also be worth trying a different output on the card, or a different cable.

Yeah on my monitor the screen is black. The pc itself turns on fine. I tried plugging it into my tv to see if it was the monitor and was able to get a picture. It didnt start right and would only load up repair program, I I backed up some stuff and restored my pc to factory, that let me actually load in fine. But the picture is still horrible, like the colors are in black in white but before it had a bit of color, and my resolution can't be changed my card isn't reading. I wil try to see if I can dl the amd drivers right now. Thanks btw.

This indicates it's a problem with the OS not starting properly, hence the monitor is black. This can definitely be a driver issue, though it may also be a hardware issue. I had this problem with my R9 390, and was only able to fix by uninstalling AMD drivers. I had to then get a replacement for the card before I could use AMD drivers, so it was a hardware issue but looked like a driver issue.

Do you have AMD drivers installed currently? What happens if you remove them - does your PC then load the OS properly with the monitor connected?

Prob a hardware issue. I downloaded and installed the drivers and when I start it up it goes to black again. Can't get a picture at all. Before I installed them I could get a picture but the colors were distorted with thick lines going down that was a slight color variation.

In terms of the R7 370, the 460W PSU should be sufficient (picked one up dirt cheap for a second computer). The R7 370 consumes ~150W maximum for most cards (75W from PCIE and 75W from a single 6 pin).

I had an issue when I installed my 280x into a win7 64bit box.
I can get generic display and login. but no matter what i did i couldn't get it to detect the card properly.
I said f it and fresh installed windows 10 and all is up and running.

Yeah I think I'm gonna order a 4gb gtx 960. Found out for sure my card is dead thankfully it wasn't my mobo. Thanks for all the replies one last thing I'm gonna get a psu some time in the near future. Will probably extend the life of my hardware if I upgrade that 460w stock psu. Any one know any good psu that are cheap compact and over 500w. I'd be willing to pay a bit more if it's quiter and better at cooling heat.

Also I hope the 960 will flow well with my 64 bit windows 7.
