WIll my own domain name help me?

I offer a small freeware program that I wrote. Usually, I host it with whatever ISP I use. Several shareware collections link to it. Because of ISP mergers, name changes, etc, the address of the webpage keeps changing. Then I have to notify those who link to it.

If I have my own domain name (less than $10/year from GoDaddy), will this allow me to keep a constant name and just redirect it as the host site name changes (eg, ATT, CWIX, MCI)? I'm most confused about the name service. Is this a standard part of registrating a domain name, or will it cost extra? Currently, I have a free AtHome site to which I would like to redirect my domain name.

Any links, tutorials appreciated.

(Since this is freeware, cost is an issue.)

The easiest way to do this is to register a domain name and then use zoneedit.com as your nameservers. Then as you move ISP's and websites, you can simply update your zoneedit nameservers to reflect the new location. Your domain name would be the same. Very easy.

While there's usually a minimal fee for domain registration (US$35.00 / yr in most cases), the service company WILL charge you for domain FORWARDING, and MAIL FORWARDING...sometimes a couple hundred dollars a year or more.

Domain forwarding is them re-directing your site's customers to whatever place is hosting it. Mail forwarding is sometimes thrown-in, but only for one or two accounts. There is also a (usually) a charge to move your domain to some other trustee / service provider...most of the time, both sides will charge.

Yahoo had an OK deal, domain registration, and redirection to an aliased Geocities site for something like $35.00 yr.

Get the details before you register. Sometimes it's cheaper to pay the higher front-end charges and get cheap service for the long run.

Find a cheapy web host (like me). Just about as cheap as forwarding, more flexable. If you really want to forward, just use cheap hosting to redirect to a different URL with a meta tag.

Check out DynDns.org - They offer services that will allow you to change the IP address of your server at a moment's notice. Not for everyone, however but it might work for you.
