450 mhz celeron, 193 ram, onboard video. This meets the system requirments that XP listed. But will it lag?

It will be slow but if you turn off all the eye candy then that should boost your performance a little.

Do not let M$ minimum requirements mislead you. Will it run? Yes. Smoothly? No. Especially since I assume you'll be running other applications on the PC too. Best bet is to get more RAM. If you can up your RAM to 512MB, it'll give you some breathing space.

I've ran it on my 500 mhz celeron with 128 megs of Ram. It ran suprisingly well. In fact my PC ran better with it than anything else I've put on it.

"Run" may not be the best word to describe XP's performance if you plan to run more than 1 small application at a time on the system in question. However, if you can increase the RAM to 512MB, I think the system's performance would be fine for general office usage.

I suggest 256 MB or greater for XP.

You're on the edge in many respects. Computers of that era will have to be forced to perform in every area. FSB was 66Mhz for Celeron then, hard drives were commonly 4200 RPM, memory was 66 Mhz.

I have a 550 Mhz PIII with 256 MB of 100 Mhz mem that runs XP allright if not pressed that has a 12G drive in it. For me, any part of the system below that would be painfully slow at startup and loading. YMMV

I still run win98se on the system (700 Mhz Athlon) I'm typing on, and with the win98se rollup at http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html it supports scanners, cameras , usb2, and photo printers fine.

I'm running on a 500 MHz celeron right now with 96 MB of ram using XP Pro. It runs surprisingly well, as smooth or smoother than it did with 98SE.

Why? The main reason i wanted to upgarde to XP is that i can't install newer programs on 98. Will 98 second edition be more compatible with newer programs?

win98 is not compatible with Firefox, adware, zonealarm etc.

It will run perfectly smooth, at least mine does, i think i have an AMD K triton or something and like 192mb of ram as well. This runs smooth as can be. Theres a small lag when going through several menus at once, and when opening up more then one program at a time (I open up firefox and GAIM at the same time and theres like a 3 second delay) other then that I couldnt be happier. I did turn off all the performance things though, and pretty much optimized it as much as I could.

It sounds like this is something you mean to do. Up the mem to 256 or greater if you can.

Performance settings to change will get many varied opinions, here are some to start.

Set the display layout to classic view, this looks much like win98. To access, right click on the start menu/ select properties/ tick classic box.

Now right click on "My computer" and select properties. Select the advanced tab. Here tick the best performance box. That disables much of the eye candy. There is and additional advaced tab, go there and tick programs twice and for virtual memory set it fixed at about 300 Meg to start.

I disable system restore and auto update also. (do manual updates).

Next is Services. Access is control panel/ management/ services. The one I disable is Indexing.

That should give a reasonable start. YMMV . Many people shut down alot of services, so they don't get loaded in mem which leaves room for programs. This is fine if you don't need the service. Plenty of room to play around in services.

Old slow (<500mhz) Pc's run surprisingly well with lots of ram and modern fast hard drives. The old pentium 400's felt slow in their day when they 64mb ram and loud slow 4 gb hard rdives.

Yah, windows 2k is basically a unbloated XP. Thats not exactly true, but for my needs it works.
