I had an Athlon 64 x2 5200+ paired with a 5770 and the CPU turned out to be a huge bottleneck. After I upgraded the CPU to a Phenom II X4 955 I doubled my frame rates in BFBC2 and ME2.

I don't see any of the AM2+/AM3 processors on the support list for that board. You might get lucky, but I wouldn't bet on it. You might be better off looking for a Phenom I instead if you can't afford to upgrade the whole shebang. And some more memory.

It does support AM2+, but it's up to the manufacturer if they are going to support the AM2+/AM3 processors like the Phenom II and Athlon II, and it looks like ASUS didn't on this board.

ok looks like im going to go with the 9850 Phenom I. how does this cpu compare in general to the rest for gaming?

edit: actually after thinking about it, i decided to go with a weaker cpu, reason being the 9850 is a power hungry beast. my powersupply is more than enough to support it but using a lot of power isnt my thing lol.

so can anyone reccomend the lowest/cheapest cpu i can run that won't bottlekneck with the 5770? thx.

edit2: alright after looking further i've decided that i'll go with the phenom I 8750. it uses 65W. u guys have any thoughts on this one?

I am not an expert on AMD Phenom CPUs, but I found this 8750 and it uses 95W, not 65W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-252-_-Product

This is a 3-core processor vs. the quad-core 9850. The 9850 uses 125W though.

It's a decent CPU but it's not as fast as the 9850. In either case, unless you are really on a budget and that board overclocks well, I would prob. save for a new platform instead. This is esp, true since you'll want 4GBs of ram at minimum and that implies buying more DDR2...

You have a 8800GS that goes good with your CPU. It could be possibly faster if CPU was more powerful. Anyhow 8800GS is a budget card, not really meant for gaming.

Upgrade your video card and ull see biggest diff,, upgrade to 9800GT for like 120 bucks or something,, gl

special thanks to russiansensation, jesusthewererabbit, and big ty also to happy medium for the nice find! that is really good news that my motherboard can handle athlon II processors :D.

anyways i've finally decided to go with the "AMD Athlon II X3 435 Triple Core Processor Socket AM3 2.9GHZ 1.5MB Cache 95W Retail Box" at $75.50. it's only triple core but its slightly faster than the athlon ii x4 620 and is cheaper too. big thank you to yall and if you guys have any input on my decision please tell me :D. gonna order it tmrw.

Awesome! I'm glad you'll be able to get a better CPU. I agree with happy medium, that 720 is a great deal, or if you can find a 620 for a little less, I'd go for that. Hell, if the Thubans were out I'd be tempted to sell you mine.
