Hey all,

my current setup is:

CPU Intel Core i5-6500
MB MSI B150M NIGHT ELF
Case SilentiumPC Gladius M45W
PSU CORSAIR RMx Series RM550x
HDD SSD Samsung 850 EVO, 2.5"
COOLER SilentiumPC Spartan 3 LT HE1012
RAM CRUCIAL 2x8GB DDR4 2133MHz
VGA nV GIGABYTE GV-N960WF2OC-4GD

I would like buy a gaming display with 144 Hz refresh rate at 1080p. At the same time I would like to replace my NV 960 for NV 1070 to achieve that (1080 seems as an overkill to me and quite expensive - you can check price comparison on a website I would purchase https://www.alza.cz/EN/).
I have a couple of questions:
  1. Won't my CPU be a bottleneck to NV 1070 as I read that it may be a case? Or any other component?
  2. Will I be able to run games (Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, WoW, GTA, Witcher 3, X-com 2) on 144 Hz at let's say medium to high details quality (even ultra)? I kind of care about quality.
  3. Should I rather go for 1440p 144 Hz gaming monitor instead of 1080p or do I want too much here?
  4. What would be the best display of choice for you if you were in my shoes both 1080p and 1440p? (not sure of the right thread here)

Thank you in advance for your help.

J.

1. I highly doubt that your CPU will be a bottleneck at all.
3. and 4. I'm using a 30" 1600p display and it's really great, and so you are not asking for too much reaching for 1440p@144Hz.

Well I rather meant if I am not asking for too much with the rig I will have after upgrading to 1070 as it may be a bit slower for 1440p capability.

I'm sure you will be fine. With some newer AAA titles you may or may not be able to play at very high or ultra detail but that isn't a problem cause by the CPU.

in cpu limited games you might have a bottleneck caused my the cpu
witcher 3 running at 144 is highly unlikely but others might be fine,
1440p 144 is highly demanding and to reach that high of an fps sli or cfx will be needed in most graphically demanding games but both are usually not recommended due to certain issues
at minimum for 1440 the tn gsync by dell all the way up to asus pg279q and acer xb271hu but the last two are quite expensive plagued by qc issues which for the price should have more stringent quality tests.

At 1080p not an issue minus witcher 3. My buddy has a similar setup and overwatch in ultra stays above 150+ fps. 1440p you will definitely need another gPu.
