Will moonlighting get me fired?

Hacp

Lifer
Currently have a salaried job in software. Thinking about working the weekends as an APPLE Genius. Spoke with the hiring guy at the apple store, he said I was highly qualified as I had been a PC tech in college. It is a highly visible position, so there is a high chance I may be spotted. What is the risk of me getting fired?

Depends what your employee handbook says

No problem in my company unless moonlighting job is in conflict with dayjob

This. Some things in life are "Better to ask for forgiveness than permission", but I'm not sure this one is. You're right, you will be noticed, and your company almost certainly has a strict for or against policy. I'd check with HR to be sure.
I'd look into getting a new/higher paying job if you need more money first than trying to do moonlighting.
And this also. I know a person who works an office job and on the side works the cashier at Walmart. Depressing 🙁

This. A large % of companies have policies allowing moonlighting as long as they don't interfere with the primary job.

keyword (phrease) is "conflict of interest". For example if you work for Microsoft then yes, its a big no-no. If you are working for Tyson chicken, then I dont think they should have any problem unless your job requires you to be on-call and stuff like that... Your HR would be the best place to ask.

Read the company policy, consult HR.

If you are currently coding software, then a conflict of interest would be coding software for apple. Repairing Apple products probably wouldn't be a conflict because it's not something your current position would do anyways. If your current employer also has a department that repairs Apple products, then you could get yourself in trouble also.

Where I work it might maybe. Any outside income is defiantly looked down upon due to potential conflicts of interest. Even receiving payment in appreciation for a task, such as couching some local sports thing, isn't officially allowed.

I've worked jobs where it was pretty much forbidden. However as long as you're not working for a competitor you'll probably be allright.

better check that employee hand book... i had accountants in my company fired because they were doing book keeping for another place on the side.. wasn't during business hours but still fired

It easily could, especially if anyone finds out about it that doesn't like you and has authority over you or is friends with those people who do.

...but they usually require you to tell them about it if youre doing it.

Do they? Is that based on your anecdotal evidence? It appears that many people here are frequently basing their "statements of fact" on their own experiences and not valid workforce surveys.

You'll also find that I agreed he needed to check his employee handbook.

And these are the things that make an Apple Genius! :colbert:

What a joke.

Yes, that's what I'm worried about. It might spiral out of control and become a bigger deal than it is. Another way to potentially make some spending cash is to pick up a girlfriend and make her pay half rent. But that might end up losing me money if I'm not careful as well. D:
