Im looking for advice:


1. What YOUR PC will be used for.- gaming

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds. If i can I will but don't know much about overclocking

8. What resolution YOU plan on gaming with. 1920-1080

I was given this as a gift, I was wondering if I could upgrade the graphics card to an amd radeon 6870 1gb or 2.

My questions is can i just upgrade the video card, or will I need to upgrade something more?

Do you know what graphic setting I will be able to run on my machine once I upgrade everything.
 
Medium-high. Of course depends on the game and what framerate you think counts as playable. But fact is that a quad core + 6870 can run any current game OK 🙂

What would i need to upgrade, to run say Battlefield 3 on ultra

Just wondering?
 
First off, there's very little noticeable difference in image quality between Ultra and High in BF3... To play Ultra with OK framerates in single player a 6950 2GB would probably be just enough. 60fps would require a dual-GPU setup and a better CPU.

To play the game online in Conquest you'd probably need a better CPU to get good framerates even on high settings.

With your CPU and a 6870, I'd just turn all the settings down as much as possible in online play to get smooth framerates. That's much more important online than image quality

Skyrim is pretty CPU dependent, see this thread. A 6850 is easily fast enough for high/ultra in Skyrim as long as the CPU is fast [edit: I should clarify that 6850 is just about fast enough, there is definitely a difference to 6870], as in an overclocked Phenom X4 or a Sandy Bridge i3 / i5. If the CPU isn't fast, a faster video card won't help. That said, adjusting the image quality settings will take some load off the CPU and improve framerates; I'd expect your system with 6850 to run medium settings fine with some AA.

Yep. You play singleplayer for the eye candy. In multiplayer, you want to turn the fancy effects off so that you can see WTF is going on.
