Will Intel's woes jinx AMD's launch of BD ?

Page 2 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.

Are you planning to get bulldozer at launch ?

  • AMD will not fail us! (obligatory AMD fanboy response)

  • I still love Intel, nothing will make me switch! (obligatory Intel fanboy response

  • I am a glutton for punishment, I just like testing new hardware, damn the consequences!

  • I'll wait for other people to test these things first!

  • Um, a bulldozer ? Is that what Intel is going to use to dig the graveyard for the p67 chipset ?

The flaw does kinda suck, but I can live with it since I have 4 Sata-6GBps ports and 4 drives (1ssd + 2hd + 1 dvd).

Thus it doesn't change anything for me regarding Bulldozer, which I'm still not going to buy, though I'm sure it will help AMD in general.

Well, from the perspective of the industry as a whole I think this is a bonafide disaster. AMD need to capitalize on this somehow, because a recall of every single chipset that works with their shiny new processor and 2 month delay on shipping updated parts feels like more than just a little stumble to me. A lot of people are pretty pissed at intel today.

From the perspective of a P67 user with only 2 SATA drives and 4 good SATA ports on his MB (me), it's no biggie. I'm actually glad I don't have to wait until April to run a SB system.

If I were in the market for BD I'd still be an early adopter personally. I mean, it's not always this bad.

I'm glad I waited,it gives me more options in April,by then we should know more on Bulldozer ETA etc....so hopefully more choices available, those that got SB already well I would be very annoyed but you have options ie wait for recall,RMA or use controller card with 6Gb ports(if you need more ports).

End of the day these things do happen,it won't be the last time you can bet on that.

Eh, the Sandy Bridge SATA problem isn't really a huge issue for many users. I think a lot of AMD Fanboy's are blowing it way out of proportion.

If anyone ever fit the intel fanboy description it is surely yourself. You told me in a post I made a few weeks ago that I liked wasting money because I chose to go with amd... I could go lookup countless other posts where you bragged about how great sandy bridge was and how it was the best thing since sliced bread. Nobody but a fanboy could overlook a issue this big. It is huge, and it's pityful to see some that have bought into the platforum early try to defend it and say it's not important. As for amd, the bulldozer will either make or break itself on it's own. We all know amd does not have bulldozer ready right now so I think it will have little to do with the sandy bridge issue, unless intel is very slow to get boards back to market.

Just remember that making a post against someone you call an Intel fanboy identifies you to them as an AMD fanboy which means they will automatically discount your opinion. This is the kind of fight you can't win and don't need to bother with.

While I can't choose any of the poll choices, as I don't feel any of them apply to the way I am thinking, I can say that this recall creates a large opportunity for AMD.

I know that I was not going to wait for Bulldozer to be released before I bought a new computer. In fact the only reason I hadn't bought a i7-2600K yet was that the motherboards were WAY OVERPRICED. Now I can't even get one until April, which is right around the time Bulldozer is scheduled to be released. So now I feel like I can wait and see how the chip performs before buying a new computer.

I see this as a big opportunity for AMD. They were losing the fight at first, since they hadn't shown up yet, but now that Intel has also left the fight they have a chance to at least show up to the fight now. It will be their performance and marketing now that will determine how successful they are, and they won't have to play catch up with OEMs and customers now.

Oh I know he will discount it :p I posted it for the benefit of others. He has called me and others out as amd fanboys in the past. The truth of the matter is, the last system I built before this one was a core 2 duo so I am no fanboy. I also know that Castiel had a x6 system not that long ago, but here lately he has championed sandy bridge to all at every opportunity and even told someone yesterday that a x6 was a worthless system to build even now that sandy bridge is not a option. I mean I see why he takes the stance he does he really has no other choice. This chipset problem would be a big issue for anyone in the industry, there just isn't any point in brushing it aside like it's a non issue that's all. I think intel will do the right thing and fix it, just how long it takes will be the kicker.

Won't really make a difference. SB will be fixed and available before BD is out, and this will be old news.

I also wanted to vote, but I found the poll choices to be at a stark disconnect with the thread title. The thread title references Intel's big stumble regarding their latest chipsets, and asks if this will affect (negatively) AMD's pending launch. I would have answered "No, I believe it won't negatively affect AMD's launch". However, the poll choices are completely different, and seem to have no relation to the thread title, and hence there is no suitable option that reflects my opinion on the referenced issue in the thread title. It is also amazing to me that when someone gave their opinion by trying to answer the question and connecting it with the thread title (first reply to the thread), the OP immediately discounts it. It is as if the thread title does not exist.

Having explained why I chose not to vote, my opinion is that this will actually give AMD some breathing room. Previouly, they had zero. Now, it is feasible that some of the motherboard partners and OEM's will be a bit pissed off at the recent happenings. It will not stop them from dealing with Intel (that is like throwing tantrums at money), but it may convince them to also deal more with AMD. At the very least, any bad publicity for Intel will always be good news for AMD. It won't make AMD gain anything overnight, but the slip-up can only be a net gain for them, no matter how small it may actually be.

I'll consider BD is price/performance is right and they start supporting SLI. Otherwise ill stay intel. I dont like being GPU locked to a specific vender for multi GPU setups, I know there are hacked drivers for SLI on AMD chipsets but i have no intrest in hacked drivers that are not officially supported.

Im unbiased and buy whatever offers best bang/buck at time of purchase for the money i have, if AMD will force me into ATI only GPU's in multiple card setups thats reason enough not to buy them.

This is in my opinion one area where AMD could learn from intel, intel will let you run crossfire even though it(ATI) is from there direct competetion.

You realize it's Nvidia that won't license SLI to AMD for their chipsets, not AMD ignoring Nvidia so they get GPU sales, right?

FWIW AMD chipsets can support SLI without issue. nVidia will not give them the proper licensing its an nVidia problem not AMDs.

Everyone here is comparing Bulldozer to the Current SB 1155 platform, but correct me if i'm wrong, but isn't bulldozer AMDs high end product ie. 6 to 8 cores and it will be competing with the 2011 platform, Intels high end product?

I'm waiting for BD but that way Intel should have the Z68 chipset out and AMD will also put pressure either on performance or price. So win win for those that wait.

It'll be competing with whatever is in it's price range. I'm not looking for BD to outperform whatever intel has on socket 2011, but it might match 1155 processors and be priced accordingly. In any case the main factor determining which processors are competing with which is price.

This nothing but good news for AMD. Intel has screwed up big time. However, the fix will be out before BD is released. This can do nothing but help AMD. They are still late and a dollar short. I hope that BD is all that is promised. If not, I'll be waiting for LGA 2011.

Dude, if BD was on the market right now, I'd buy it and fix my sandy bridge in December.

oh really?

have they shown real benchmark numbers of it beating an i7 yet?

Shhhh Aig. Let them believe BD is actually going to compete with a I7 950.

I mean we have all these programs that can actually take advantage of 8 cores err module's

I wouldn't. If i had to return my board and processor i'd jump right to 1366

You mean jump backwards.

Either way, Im likely to get BD, AMD setups are some much cheaper than intel ones here.

IF BD's 4 module variants are close to bloomfield i'd totally forget about 1366 BUT if it takes BD's 8 core to beat intel's 4 core its a total waste.

Eh, I've been wanting to switch to AMD. And change my GPUs because I can't run SLI. And have lesser performance, likely.

...

its just a quick scam to save billions getting theyre old stock back. Spend 1.5bilinstead of 5-10 billion trying to buy all the shares back

I meant its a step backwards from SB.

I don't really care how many cores they cram in there, If its comparative with SB or IB or whatever, It's likely to be cheaper here, so I'll go with that.

lolz..

u know the FTC would rape intel for that.

And i mean a rape beyond what microsoft got from the entire world.
