Will Intel release a new chipset for IB-e?

Probably not, IB-E's release is very close and intel hasn't released any information on an upcoming 2011 chipset. More than likely, some motherboard vendors may step up with boards that have additional SATA 6G ports, USB 3.0, among other things - using ASmedia of course (since x79 itself is limited in that respect).

A great deal of x79 boards have such features already, although I'd agree a platform refresh would be nice - especially for those who will be new to 2011 when IB-e is released. Sadly it doesn't appear that the enthusiast platform will be updated until Haswell-E. (which is probably coming sooner than many expect in 2014)

Is there any word at all about a possible refresh, even if it is just X79. Im looking to buy an LGA 2011 board, with at least 5 PCI-e slots (4 of which must be X16, and the fifth needs to be at least X4) and 16+ SATA ports. The only board out there now that comes close to that is the X79 Extreme11 by ASrock, I currently own the Z77 extreme11 and love it, but plan on building an ultra massive build soon and want a board that can keep up.

You're looking for a workstation board with additional features. Not even an updated platform chipset is going to give you those.

The X79 extreme11 has every feature I want except more native SATA ports, I was hoping for a refresh since ASRock is releasing the Z87 with 22 SATA 6g ports.

I'm sure at least some mobo mfrs. will take advantage of the IB-E release to sell revamped versions of X79 boards.
 
Motherboard vendors that are 2011 socket boards.. All you need is a BIOS update and you can use IVY E. The last 2 BIOS updates for me said its ready.

ASUS rocks with BIOS updates like this one which allows the IVY Chip work with socket 2011.

I just updated to a BIOS 1 month old and it said ,, support for newer CPUs ,, I believe Im ready, pop out the 3820 grrrr and pop in the 1k 12 thread 5Ghz giddy monster. The fastest desktop CPU ever made is the 4960x. Im gonna pay 1k and buy it and not upgrade until 2020 or something...

I rather pay 1k on a CPU then 1k for a Titan video card. hehhe..
 
My Asus Z68-V\GEN3 only has 6 SATA ports and I'm only using 2. You don't need more than what you have already have or do you like spending money for no reason?

Well, only 2 of those ports on the Asus Z68 are SATA6G, and if you're using more than 2 SATA6G devices - that is where the problem comes in. I tend to think that LGA 2011 users would, on average, have more drives than Z68/Z77/Z87 users would tend to have (since it is a premium platform) so I could see the desire for it. Personally, I don't need 16 as Smoblikat would like, but more than 2 is certainly preferable. They also need to be native intel 6G ports, because while *many* motherboards have additional marvell or ASmedia chips for additional SATA6G ports, those will not work in RAID or SSD cached with intel ports. They also tend to have lower overall performance in comparison to native intel 6G ports.

The perfect number for me would be 6-8. I use multiple spin drives for data and also multiple SSDs; I would also like the ability to SSD cache (using Intel's SRT) between any drives of my choosing. X79 and Z77 currently do not allow this unless you are using native intel ports. Well, that kinda sucks because there are only 2 native intel ports and I have 6 drives. X79 doesn't support SRT period, while Z77 supports SRT only on native intel 6G ports - So I can see the desire for more than 2, certainly, although 16 seems like overkill.

Sadly, since a new IB-E chipset isn't being developed this isn't possible, but there are some excellent motherboard implementations out there. Asus has designed their own SSD caching algorithm which is *excellent* and also works on their marvell and ASMedia SATA6G ports, i've personally tested it (on my Z77 board) and it performs extremely well. So it's a great SSD caching alternative since Intel's SRT doesn't work on X79.

I agree. 2 sata6 is what the X58 chipset has. Why in the world. 3 years later are we still on 2. The EVGA dark almost looks better than the rampage.

I think this is why enthusiasts are so bored these days. USB3 is the most 'exciting' thing we are looking forward to. :/

Kind of tells ya what new features are coming out...

How many SATA ports I need and what I do with my money is none of your concern, I was asking about a possible motherboard revision, not financial advice.
