Will installing DirectX 8.1 OVERWRITE 9.0???

I have Windows XP Pro SP1 and I have upgraded to DirectX 9.0 and now 9.0a. I have had a few problem with 9.0 and 9.0a. Ever since 9.0 was installed on my computer it has slowed down some applications. I did a test with this one "Folio Views" program, for example, and when I launched the program under 8.1, it would load INSTANTANEOUSLY! But RIGHT AFTER 9.0 was installed, when I launch Folio Views it takes like 30sec.-1min to load. AFTER it loads, however, I can close out of it and instantly open it again. But this sure is a pain to have to wait for it to load at the initial launch after XP has been booted up.

My problem is, I want to go back to 8.1, but I DON'T WANT TO USE "SYSTEM RESTORE"! *please, don't take my yelling personally--simply for emphasis *

System Restore will have to be my last resort. I installed ALL the updates for Windows XP and I'm not in the mood for having to redownload them (System Restore does remove any Windows Update also, doesn't it? Or does it just remove the updates, but so you don't have to download them again...and then just quickly reinstall them?)

Anyway, if I install DirectX 8.1 Redistributable for Developers will it overwrite version 9.0(a)? so that afterwards I'll go in DX DIAGNOSTICS and it will show "Version 8.1"?

Your help would be greatly appreciated in this area, thank you.

In my experience the answer to this question is yes, but I did uninstall the old version before I installed the new one.

You can't uninstall DirectX 9.0, everybody knows that so what are you talking about?

Unless you're speaking of some special freeware DX buster prog.?

no, I dont think it will... I think you need to reformat it to get rid of it.... sucks I know.

at any rate, backup stuff before trying it, its bound to screw something up
