Will I regret getting a 720P LCD TV?

I am thinking about purchasing a 37' 720P LCD TV. I know 1080P is the new standard in TV's. Will I see much of a difference or will I regret later down the road for not spending the extra on a 1080P set.

I am a tv noob so bare with me.

 
If you plan to stay on top of the new digital movie technology, then you'll regret not having a 1080p. Then again, without 1080p not much point for you to get BR/HDDVD anyway.
 
Unless you want to use the LCD as a computer monitor also, its not a big deal.

I currently have a 1080P LCD right now and while I love it because I use it as a computer monitor for the 1920x1080 resolution, I used to own a plasma and the plasma was much better for watching TV.
 
Scaler issues? That was a misinformed statement. I have a PS3 and a 32'' 720p television and have zero problems running my PS3 in either 720p/1080i and it looks amazing. Don't know where you got your information, but it's incorrect.
 
the PS3 scaling issue affects 1080i displays ONLY.

Yeah 720p for a 37" lcd is fine, but I would rather have a plasma.

At 37 inch, unless you sit with your face 3 feet from the screen, you won't notice a difference.
 
I just got a 32" lcd for my room and I love the thing, it was only $600 at costco with lifetime warranty.
 
If you plan to use the TV for mainly watching TV then no regrets since OTA, sat. or cable companies only output 1080i or 720p right now anyway.

So you're saying that having to switch between 720p and 1080i when playing games vs watching a BD isn't an issue?

just remember, it is like computer technology. you can hold off and wait to buy a 1080p for cheaper, but by that time, 1440p will be the standard.

I just went through 3 LCD televisions before I decided to go with a plasma. The colors on a plasma are more vivid, bright, deeper and frankly, imho, just a lot better. The ONLY reason I would get an LCD over a plasma is if:

1) The room I was going to watch TV in was bright. Plasma TVs reflect light because of the glass. LCD's don't.
2) I was going to use it as a computer monitor.
3) I was going with anything smaller than 37" (minimum of a plasma, afaik).

BTW, the LCD's I went through are:

- Polaroid FLM-3232 32" LCD TV from Wal-Mart. Was probably the best out of all 3 I had. No ghosting, decent colors, SD looked good.
- JVC 32" LCD TV from BestBuy. Colors were off and SD looked terrible. It was also $300 more than the Polaroid.
- Westinghouse 37" 1080p LCD Monitor. Resolution was amazing and colors were good, but that doesn't help when EVERYTHING you watch is ghosting. The monitor was terrible with ghosting from any signal from my cable box. 1080i was completely unwatchable. 720p was better, but the ghosting was definitely there. Even my wife (who doesn't know much about home theater) could see it. Gave us both a headache.


I just picked up a Maxent 42" Plasma from BestBuy for $1000. The colors are amazing. No ghosting. SD looks the best that I've seen (probably from the lower resolution) and it just feels/looks like the right TV.
With that said, the colors are amazing, but still a little off. I'm taking this one back and going with a Panasonic 42" Plasma this week. Got a great deal on it and have read nothing but excellent reviews. This is the TV for me.
 
As for 1080p vs 720p, you can always wait till tommorrow for something better ... you have to buy now though.

I basically decided to get a 720p 42" display recently. No reason to pay more for 1080 since there is no content yet. Sure, blue ray and HD-DVD are out, but at what price? And it's not like digital cable supports 1080 now anwyas. When 1080 is the norm, I'll pay for a 1080p display.

if u plan on using the TV as a computer monitor also, then get a 1080p. My friend got a westinghouse 42" 1080p LCD. Not only was I very pleasantly surprised at the quality of this tv, but when he hooked up his laptop via VGA I was blown away by the clarity. All text was as sharp and clear as my 20" LCD monitors. He started up a picasa slideshow...man its awesome viewing pics on this TV. Perfectly fine to use that TV as a 1920x1080 42" monitor!

Otherwise for normal TV viewing 720p is fine @ 37"
